Here is a book tip that is also a film tip. Li Cunxin grows up as a poor peasant boy in communist China. His family barely has enough food for the day, but he learns early on that, thanks to Chairman Mao, he lives in the richest country in the world. Imagine how terrible the people in the capitalist world must be!
An unlikely journey
One day, a delegation comes all the way from Beijing and selects Li Cunxin to study at Madame Mao's ballet academy. It's the unlikely start of an even more unlikely journey that will turn the poor Chinese farm boy into one of the greatest ballet dancers in America. It is not the literary (or cinematic) qualities that are the highlight, but Li Cunxin's life story.

Funny coincidence... I have read the English version. It was a bit slow to read, at least in English for me, but the story was interesting.

Katarina, glad you just read it too! He may be a bit long-winded in his storytelling at times, but I still enjoyed the story.
