Camping in the Faroe Islands - tips and inspiration

Camping in the Faroe Islands must be a special experience! I lived in the Faroe Islands for two months in the late 90s, and interned at the hospital there. The Faroe Islands are a fascinating society: just under 50,000 people on 18 islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The islands' cliffs are steep, the grass is green and the fog is often thick. So what would it be like to camp in the Faroe Islands?

Our trip to the Faroe Islands

Me and my classmate Eva-Lena, from the occupational therapy programme, spent two months in the Faroe Islands during our internship. Of course, we took the opportunity to look around too! We rented a car at one point and travelled around the two largest islands, Streymoy and Eysturoy.

On another occasion, we took a helicopter ride. We also hitchhiked around some of the islands. Wherever we went, we were met by friendly people. In one place they even opened up a restaurant, which was actually closed for the season, just for us.

Tips on camping in the Faroe Islands

We have never tried camping in the Faroe Islands, but many others have! Arnbjørn Johannesen has told us that camping in the Faroe Islands is great. General information can be found at Official tourism site of the Faroe Islands. Information on the ferry can be found at Smyril Lines website.

My own pictures from the Faroe Islands are old and sitting in photo albums, so I've borrowed these great pictures from Hans Flügge's websitefrom a trip he made to the Faroe Islands in 2010. Photos: Hans Flügge
