Tips for a good blog! Do you have your own blog? Or are you thinking about starting one? To some extent you might be writing for yourself, but isn't it great if you get a bunch of readers? Getting readers to your blog may require some marketing, but above all it requires a good blog!

Our tips for a good blog
Here are some tips for a good blog. Of course, there may be different opinions on this, but here are our thoughts based on many years of blogging and blog reading. Feel free to comment - what do you think is important for a blog to be worth reading and keep you coming back?
1. Choose a focus for your blog
Sure, you can blog about anything, but it's easier to know why people should read your blog if it has a focus. Do you write about interior design, travel, fashion or food? If you find a niche where you're a bit lonely, that can be great.
2. Be passionate about your subject
Choose your specialisation based on your interests. If you are passionate about what you write about, it will show! You will also have no trouble finding topics to blog about.
3. Be personal
Tips and news blogs are all very well, but if you don't know who is behind the blog, it becomes impersonal. Dare to tell us about yourself even if you mostly write about flowers, interior design or dogs.
4. Dare to be unique
If you just write exactly the same thing as everyone else, why should anyone read your blog? Dare to have your own perspectives and your own view on things!
5. Piece part
Reading online is not the same as reading a book or a magazine. If posts look long and heavy, it is easy for readers to get bored even before they start reading. Longer texts can benefit from being divided into paragraphs with headings and some space in between.
6. use good headings
A good headline should arouse the reader's curiosity, while clearly describing what the post is about. Avoid writing about three different things in the same post - if there are three important things, maybe three posts?
7. Proofread your own posts
By proofreading, you can find spelling mistakes and clumsy wording. Well-written posts are always easier to read.
8. Use images
Reading is more fun when there are pictures, it's as simple as that. If the pictures are nice and interesting, that's an extra plus! Feel free to find different things to photograph, or find a new angle. In case of emergency, you can borrowing images from an image bank, for example, but be sure to check that the use of the images you borrow is authorised.
9. Have a clean and tidy design
Another tip for a good blog is to think about the design. A clean and tidy blog design is appealing and makes it easier to focus on the content. Avoid having too many distracting adverts. In particular, be wary of flashing and spinning.
10. look at the blog from the outside
Imagine you are a new reader coming to your blog. Is it easy to find out that you are a single mum living in Spain for two years, or do you have to read twenty posts to find that information? Make it easy for the reader!
11. update regularly
How often you should update depends entirely on the type of blog you have, but regardless, it's a good idea to update regularly. Do you want to blog once a day, or once a week? Stick to the same routine, so readers know it's worth checking back regularly.
12. communicating with readers
Reading blogs is fun when you feel like you are connecting with the blogger. Ask readers questions and respond to comments. If you wish, you can also communicate via social media or a newsletter.

Ditte says:
Good and thoughtful tips! I'll examine myself... I know that I need to write shorter and will work on that. More difficult in terms of focus ... But I have to think about it.
And what you write about updating, it is important. I have followed a number of blogs with the update happening maybe once a week and then at least I get tired.

Annelie-Singapore says:
Everything you write is important, but it is difficult for me to fulfil everything ;).
Sloppy proofreading, writing too long texts and losing the thread sometimes to the headline etc etc.
A picture says more than a thousand words, but of course a good headline and preamble that captures your interest. Especially when you have many blogs that you follow on bloglovin, then you see the headline, image and preamble. If it is interesting, you click and read.
Have a nice Sunday / Hugs!

I agree with you on almost all points, except updating often. When travelling, it will be every day, but in everyday life it will probably be about 3 times a week.
The problem I'm having is struggling with blogger because my page isn't updated by everyone, it ends in Morocco even though I've continued. It got stuck somehow down there :)) May well go down in the autumn and pick it up....haha.
Great tips to you give.

Ditte, yes, it's good to think sometimes... I try to do that too! And of course it is important that the blog feels updated.
Annelie-Singapore, some blogs are better at some things and others at others. But it can be good to take a little reflection sometimes. I agree that pictures are very important, blogs without pictures become a bit heavy to read.
Maggan and Ingemar, sorry about your troubles with Blogger. Can at least comfort you that it doesn't seem to affect those of us who read the blog in other ways (I read via Bloglovin and the update seems to work there).

Monica Mattsson says:
I really agree. Updating often is very important otherwise readers get tired of going in and checking "there's no point", and keeping your posts short also feels important. I can't be bothered to read if it's too long.
Then it depends on the purpose of the blog.

Anki says:
Wise tips on blogging, but not always easy to follow. I usually respond to comments and questions the next time I visit the blog of the person asking the question. Very rarely do I go back to a blog and check the answer to a comment - usually only if I have asked a direct question.
How often you should update... it's hard to say. Depends a bit on the situation. If you have nothing to write about, you don't... and I don't think you should feel obliged to update every day if you don't want to.
19 May 2013 - 14:10
admin says:
Monica Mattson, I agree that it depends on the purpose of the blog! A blog can have very different orientations and purposes ...
Anki, if I want to be absolutely sure that the writer is reading my answer, I go to that person's blog and write the answer there. Otherwise, I write the answer on my own blog. I'm fully aware that you don't always go back and read though... As for updating, I can agree that you shouldn't feel forced to update. Not only does it make blogging boring, but the posts might not be as fun (I think you can skip posts with the title "Blog drought". Rather write the next or the next day, I think.) But as I said, if you update far too rarely, it can be boring ...

As usual, wise tips from you. Reading a lot of text in some blogs makes me tired. And if the blog is only updated every second or once a week, I stop checking in after a while. On the other hand, I don't have time to read those that update several times a day either....

www.imitthuvud.hemsida24.se says:
I agree that you should update often so that there is a reason for readers to check it out. But focus... Well, it becomes so "narrow" then. And so little to write about. I really write about everything in my blog!

admin says:
Criss-cross, that's how I feel too! I want the blog to be updated, but if it's updated five times a day, I can get a bit stressed because then I don't have time to read....
😉
Imitthuvud, thanks for the comment! Of course there is room for different kinds of blogs! I read some blogs that are really about everything, but often it's something special that gets me hooked: that there are nice pictures, that you write in a funny way... or whatever it may be.

BP says:
It was a very good list. Not so easy to follow all the points and if I talk about myself, I neglect a lot there, including the focus. My blog swings wildly.
Who has the time/effort to write at least three posts/day? Who has the energy to comment? Good posts should generate sensible comments, not blah blah blah - like Great photos. I would like an explanation of why the photos are good or bad.
Then it's a question of how much you want to reveal about yourself. If the posts are good, it should be fairly uninteresting if I'm a married housewife with 5 children or...?
Yes also these spelling mistakes. I hate every time I discover one or more in my posts. Nobody is perfect but I have a hard time with spelling and punctuation errors, punctuation as well, but one is only human.
I have also noticed that many of us use a "blog language", including myself. It often occurs to me at work when I read a script that I'm not a writer - "just" a blogger;-)
Many thanks for the tips!

admin says:
BP, no, who has time to write three blog posts a day? I suspect it's about young people... Personally, I'd rather have one good post a day than three half-baked ones.
When it comes to how much you want to "reveal", it is of course a personal choice, but it also depends on what kind of blog you have. I can think it's nice to "get to know" the blogger a bit, but it can be in different ways. Often you may choose to tell some parts - but not others. Of course you don't have to expose your whole life just because you have a blog...! We tell some things about ourselves, but these are of course selected parts. There are also many things that we don't write about...
I'm like you when it comes to typos. I hate it - and yet from time to time I find myself making them! Maybe it's easy because blogging is something that happens fairly quickly after all....
By the way, I think your blog has a pretty clear profile, even if you can write about a few different things. And always nice pictures!
🙂

Stumbling in here a bit on profit and loss. Just wanted to say thank you for solid good advice that makes me think about my own writing and not least the lack of focus and profile - sigh 🙂 .
Hard to define is also what catches my interest and makes me more curious about some blogs while others just pass by. Personality and communication, as you mention, are in any case important for me to stop. I also notice that I have become increasingly demanding during the year.
20 May 2013 - 15:16
admin says:
Ilhertz, glad you stopped by! Sure, it's good to think about it sometimes... I agree that it's a bit interesting to think about what makes you get stuck or not. Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes maybe a little harder to put your finger on.

Matts Torebring says:
I can only agree on all points. The way you describe a blog, with content and focus, has been my policy since I started. Rather more pictures than too much text. Preferably with links to a map, because it is not easy to keep track of all the places in Europe, as well as at home in Sweden. Many bloggers, who travel and move around a lot, are lacking in the latter. Coordinates in all honour, but I think a link to a map is more interesting. Then there is not enough time for me, who still works one and a half hours, to date every day. Have a good time.
20 May 2013 - 19:32
admin says:
Matts, good posts with pictures are more important than updating often, I think. Coordinates are certainly good for some, but we have a GPS where you can't enter coordinates (only street addresses), so for us it's completely uninteresting...

Inga Magnusson says:
You have wise advice for bloggers!
I tend to write too long sometimes, but at the same time it's that very need that makes me blog instead of being active on Facebook. On FB, it works better to stay short, when I tried to write there, it flooded over all the boards.
If you write long sometimes, it may be wise to add a short post above or a lighter one with a picture or so.
I have deliberately chosen not to niche the blog, even though I know it brings in more readers. But I like to mix the diary format with different interest posts.
Then I haven't picked up a lot of readers, I'm quite happy as it is and also deliberately choose a smaller group to exchange comments with. It's enough with 5 or 10, otherwise it becomes too much of a 'duty'.
To sit and write new posts and update three times a day, I think few can handle it. I usually put together a number of posts when I have time and then publish them a little at a time. Not everything has to be news and current. A couple of times a day I probably update, but maybe with several posts each time.
21 May 2013 - 9:15
admin says:
Inga Magnusson, thank you for your comments! Of course you have to find a way to blog that suits you. Although I think it's good to keep it reasonably short, I agree that there is an opportunity to spread out a bit more than in many other social media, such as FB or Twitter.

Another thing that irritates me as a reader is the linking, i.e. if the linking page appears on the same web page as the one that posted the link. Often I want to be able to go back to the original blog and read on. Have a good time at Sonjas, it is one of our favourite campsites and has been there a number of times.
