When travelling, you often need to get around in different ways, sometimes between places and sometimes within a place. Here are some of the different modes of transport we've tried. Which one do you prefer ... or prefer not to use?
Table of contents
1. mop
Often easy and cheap to rent in Asia, and an easy way to get around. We have rented a moped in Vietnam, Malaysia and on Philippines. You just have to be careful in traffic!
2. flights
Of course, flying has huge advantages when travelling long distances. In the picture we are on our way to Ukrainebut of course we have also flown many other routes.
3. cycle for four
Bicycles like this were available for hire in Jesolo on the Adriatic Sea in Italy. The shopping street was so long that they were actually needed ...
4. trains
A great way to travel! It's comfortable and you often meet new people. In the picture you can see Trans-Siberian railway. We have also travelled by train in places like Ukraine and Kenya.
5. Small boats
Different types of boats are useful for travelling between islands. Here you see Philippine boats, 'bankas', which become an important means of transport in a country with 7000 islands.
6. Motorhome
The perfect means of transport! It's quick and easy to get around on the road while keeping your bedroom, kitchen and bathroom with you.
7. bicycle taxis
Different types of cycle taxis, or rikshas, are common in Asia. In the picture we are in China and will soon deal with the taxi driver who took an extra trip on his own and wants to be paid extra for it.
8. ferry
If you're travelling across larger seas or lakes, a ferry can be handy. Especially if you have your car/caravan with you. In the picture we are on our way from Skåne to Poland.
9. Horse and carriage
When you see this mode of transport, it is usually for tourist reasons. This was the case in Morocco as well, but a big advantage of the mode of transport was that you could photograph in peace!
10. Jeepney
These 'buses', often colourfully decorated, are widely used in the Philippines. The origin is an American military vehicle left behind after World War II.
Lena Dyche says:
Yes, it was a tricky question. When you see all the pictures, every way seems best! Maybe it depends on where you are, the weather, how much time you have, etc. However, I prefer flying for longer distances.

Alexandra says:
Exciting to try several different means of transport! What's best depends a bit on the purpose of the trip, if you're travelling between point A and point B and it's a long way, air travel is clearly best, but sometimes it's the transport itself that is the journey.
🙂
However, I think that all these horses in cities tend to look rather depressed, but then again, I don't know anything about horses!

BP says:
I really like that Jeepney! Imagine the recycling! And it's still going strong!
We probably favour flights to get from A to Z quickly. Then we have rented both a motorbike and a car.

Role o Carina says:
Long-distance flights are the best and fastest!!!
Otherwise, the car, motorbike and camper van are the best!

Lena Dyche, of course it depends... very different circumstances!
Alexandra, I agree! Sometimes you just want to get there, sometimes the journey is the goal in itself! I don't think it always looks so fun to be a horse that will draw tourists in the city...
BP, they are really cool! Some are much cooler than the one I happened to photograph! But I guess maybe they make new ones, even if the model is old...?
Rolle and Carina, if you are going to Asia it is a bit impractical with the motorhome, but often it is the best!

Mr Steve says:
For me it's now the Minicrosser electric mop and the Melex electric car. I especially remember the basket sleds from the past in Madeira.

Lena & Jan says:
Have tried and like most of the above, but I avoid small boats (Lena) can be exchanged for helicopters or small aeroplanes.

Ditte says:
I've tried all your suggestions and think most of them have their advantages. I've also tried helicopters, but that counts as a flight...
Opt out? Yes, night ferries in Asia, nothing else.

ABB wife says:
Electric mop is da shit here in Kinaland! Environmentally friendly and convenient! Would SOOOO like to bring my flak mop home but do not think it is allowed. Jeepney I like, we also went a lot of tricycle in the Philippines.

Steve, basket sleds...? That sounds interesting!
Lena & Jan, it's true! We think boats are cosy, at least if they don't feel too unsafe...
Ditte, helicopters are exciting! I have travelled by helicopter once, in the Faroe Islands, but I don't have the photos digitally.
ABB wife, electric mop seems smart and smooth! We also rode a tricycle a few times in the Philippines. They are smart, but a bit crowded, haha.
