If you can't afford to go out for an exclusive New Year's Eve dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant, then you need to know someone who can provide such food at home. We've been lucky this year! On New Year's Eve, we were invited to Peter's niece Dessi, who offered an absolutely fantastic New Year's menu.
New Year dinner in the archipelago
Peter's niece Dessi lives with her boyfriend on Blidö in the Stockholm archipelago. We already knew that she is a good cook, but the New Year's Eve dinner we were invited to exceeded everything we could have imagined.
The only time we have experienced such fantastic menus was at Riga's best restaurants. The dinner began with small appetisers to be enjoyed on the spot, including salmon rolls and small New Year flags.
7-course menu
The menu we were offered consisted of 7 dishes, and in addition, various small dishes were served before, in between and after "which did not count", so really there were even more taste experiences ... All the dishes were as small as you want them to be when there are many dishes and were served with neat arrangements, as in the best of restaurants. The 26-year-old chef described all the dishes, but I still can't describe the menu in detail.
In short, we were served:
- Pear carpaccio with blue cheese and pine nuts
- Smoked potato cream and three types of roe
- Carrot puree with butter-fried cod and whitefish, crayfish and trout roe
- Cod with Jerusalem artichoke puree
- Beef Wellington with potato towers
- Rosemary ice cream pastry with candied rosemary
- Lemon mousse with fresh berries
A fantastic New Year's Eve dinner! How did you celebrate New Year's Eve and what did the New Year's menu look like?

Oh my God! That girl is really a master chef. Very smart to be invited to her house;-)
Dessi must really love to cook. I mean it must have taken weeks to cook that food... So nice signs she wrote too. WOW!
After seeing this post, I am very hesitant to post the food we ate last night, which I had intended to do;-)

Åsa says:
Oh my God! Impressive! I wish I knew someone who could cook such food! I'm not that excited about cooking, and find it hard to get it right when it really matters. We grilled here on New Year's Eve. The salad was the best. (:

Anita, the migraine stayed at bay yesterday so I could enjoy that amazing dinner. Happy New Year!
Imelda, that was really "wow". But your New Year's Eve sounds cosy too!
Znogge, yeah right haha!? 😉 Happy New Year!
Comsi comsa, we were drooling a lot too haha... Keep up the good work!
BP, she IS a master chef and we are so impressed! I guess there was a lot of preparation, but when we were there she was as calm as could be. Even that is impressive!
Åsa, Peter and I do like to cook, but it's not on this level at all... By the way, we had a great meal at your house last year!

Susjos says:
Oh, my God! She works as a cook?!
I unfortunately got food poisoning a few days before New Year's Eve, but made sure that the husband at least went away for New Year's celebrations! So I ate a banana with my mineral water in solitude...saddest New Year's Eve ever!
01 January 2016 - 17:17
admin says:
Susjos, no she doesn't actually work as a chef, although you might think so. Oh what a boring New Year's Eve! I can console you that I had a similar Christmas Eve: migraine, mushroom soup and water.

Ditte says:
What food, what a chef and what a party! Really impressive to get all the nice and delicious dishes for so many people and some dishes were also hot.
Fantastic! You have to choose your friends...
Good luck!

Maria says:
Wow, it was a New Year's dinner that is called good! 🙂 I worked until 10 o'clock in the evening, but we celebrated it a bit with homemade pizza and then a couple of the refugee children at the accommodation turned one year old, so there was also cake and some other good things, good enough for me 🙂.

Steve, it really was a fantastic meal! Looking forward to reading about your New Year celebrations at Getingstorp. All the best for the future!
Ditte, really impressive logistics. Also, the chef was completely relaxed and calm! Good continuation!
Maria, yes, it was a fantastic New Year celebration! But it usually looks different for us, other years it can be much easier. It sounds like you had a cosy and nice New Year celebration!
Matts, the table setting was impressive! Have a nice continuation!

Mr Steve says:
Oh dear!
My reaction was in English. Why? Well, "dear" seemed a bit too silly for this fantastic meal. I would have liked to sit at that table.
I myself celebrated New Year here at Getingstorp and I will try to achieve a post on my blog before the first day of the year is over. Happy New Year!

Deciree, it's really nice to be invited to someone who makes such an effort. We really appreciate it too! 🙂
BP, I understand what you mean. We also like to cook, but here we feel that we are in the league... 😉 .

BP says:
Answer: Hahahaha! It was not only your amazing New Year's menu that made me back off, but at least three other bloggers' as well. So don't take offence - I'm just so jealous that our food skills (= the patience and preparation) are not in that class, even though we like to cook;-).

Ruth in Virginia says:
Luxury - Luxury!
I get sweaty just thinking about it.
Hope some of the guests helped with the dishes. 🙂 As it looks,
there were 10 guests. 7 dishes = 70 plates. Each "place setting"
had 9 knives, forks, etc. = 90 items; presumably silver, which must be
washed by hand.
One thing that strikes me - why are such large plates used for such small portions?
Like the plate of cod and Jerusalem artichoke puree, etc. for example? Certainly looks
it looks decorative, but you almost have to chase the bits and pieces around on the
the large surface area.
Enlarged the picture of the dessert and asked the daughter, what she thought
the green on top could be. We both came to the decision, that it
was a pair of geccos. (don´t tell the chef)
Seriously - I'm totally impressed by someone who can do the following
a meal like this. Lucullus - does he have anything to do with food?
Did you have coffee with your meal? (Take offence - it is late and my
hockey team lost)

Mr Frank Olsen says:
Happy New Year Helena and Peter !!!
It was an impressive New Year's dinner yes, and a wonderfully nicely set table. Some people are luckier than others 🙂 .
But I'm glad it wasn't me who had to do the dishes afterwards.

Ruth in Virginia, haha, yes there was a lot of cutlery and plates! Luckily it wasn't silver so it was fine to use the dishwasher. Why are such large plates used for such small portions? Yes, you might ask, but there is probably a bit of fashion in how food should be served and presented. Today it's a bit fashionable in fine restaurants to do that... As for the dessert, you and your daughter missed the fact that we were actually kind enough to sign what the green stuff was, i.e. candied rosemary. Lucullus?
Lena in Wales, yes it was a great menu! Wishing you also a good continuation of the new year!
Ama de casa, it doesn't sound like you had any trouble with the neighbours either! 🙂
Frank Olsen, yes it was a fantastic dinner! You are absolutely right that there were a lot of dishes. Lucky at least that there are dishwashers today! 🙂

As said family members are important 'lovely new year menu AND beautiful'. Here we sat outside and ate 'Langostini sandwiches' for lunch. Evening dinner was grilled meat with pomme o bea, not so nice but good enough on a winter camping 😉 😉 you know yourself ... it's the occasion that does it!

Gold worth having such friends and acquaintances! 7-course beats everything I have experienced in food and everything so beautiful too. She must really like this with food and also have good help I suspect. Good continuation of 2016. I look forward to following your life and living on a houseboat.
