Finally it was time for the barbecue premiere! A few days ago we inaugurated our barbecue here on the deck of the houseboat. It was the first time we grilled this year, and also the first time we tried our grill at all. A bit funny perhaps, considering that we bought the grill a year and a half ago. But then we left on our 1-year-long motorhome trip and rented out the houseboat ...
A little barbecue while travelling in Europe
There was not much grilling during our 1-year European motorhome holiday in 2015. We brought a small, handy Weber charcoal grill that we like, but it turned out that charcoal grills are banned on almost every campsite in Europe.
We grilled a few times when we stood on a gravel pitch in Portugal, but otherwise it was mostly other cooking. We dragged the grill a little unnecessarily if you say so ... But now we got the chance to grill on the deck of the houseboat instead!
Barbecue premiere with goodies
What ended up on the grill this time? Well, it was various goodies like marinated chicken, sliced halloumi and asparagus. We have never grilled asparagus before, but it was delicious! We first cooked it for 30 seconds in a pan, drizzled on some olive oil and then grilled it for a few minutes. Asparagus will definitely end up on our grill again!
Another favourite to grill is halloumi - soooo good! I could almost skip the chicken and just eat halloumi and asparagus. On the other hand, marinated chicken is delicious. We usually choose to marinate in red wine marinade. This time, we chose to serve our grilled goodies together with some pickings, like tomato, mache salad, melon and strawberries. Fresh and crisp! What is your favourite thing to put on the grill?
Aila says:
Try wrapping bacon around the halloumi. Brush with a little barbecue sauce and then grill.
Do the same with the salmon fillet.
Wrap with bacon, brush with barbecue sauce and then grill.
Gudagott....

What a wonderful barbecue environment. Isn't it great to have all the premieres that summer makes possible? Nice table setting.
Halloumi is our barbecue favourite. An excellent substitute for meat.

Jennifer - Swedish in Helsinki says:
Chicken is soooo good when you don't overcook/grill it. Tip is to use a thermometer 😉
I do like a really good piece of meat though - that's also the best thing about visiting my mum in the summer as I don't have a barbecue myself.
Why were charcoal grills not allowed on most campsites?

Looked really yummy! Like that on a boat. Great!
I don't grill myself nowadays, but I think my daughter and I will grill this weekend, I'm going to Värmland today.
There will probably be organic vegetables and some nice meat.
Happy Pentecost!

We grill most things, but there are more and more vegetables! Asparagus is very good and especially with some grated parmesan cheese when they are ready.
Happy Friday!

Aila, oh that sounds delicious! Thanks make great idea! 🙂
Steve, we also love halloumi and I can see how it becomes an extra favourite when you don't eat meat!
Jennifer, we often use a thermometer on meat in the oven so I know what you mean! There is a big difference between chicken that is dry or not! Guess they were worried about the fire risk at the campsites....
Deciree, delicious and lovely view at the same time 🙂 Take care!
Geddfish, it sounds like you have a great barbecue to look forward to!
Znogge, grated parmesan cheese over sounds delicious! We must try it 🙂 Have a nice weekend!
Nils-Åke, fish is also very good on the grill, I agree!

Ama de casa says:
Ooops... I hope this ban is fairly new, because we have grilled on campsites many times. But with disposable grills, because the space in the car when camping is really limited. We don't want anything visible inside the car. Except for the fridge. It didn't fit anywhere else 🙂.
I like to grill haloumi, onions that have been soaked in soya or teriyaki, garlic cloves and preferably pork, which is juicy and good 🙂.

Isn't it nice to grill when the sun is shining! 🙂
We premiered the garden a few days ago.
Then it was pork curry, otherwise we also like fish 🙂 .
Take care.....Happy Pentecost weekend......

Ama de casa, I guess it varies from campsite to campsite, but we found that bans were common... Interesting about the onions in soya or terryaki!
Rolle and Carina, wonderful with the barbecue premiere! Yes fish is good to grill! 🙂

Asparagus is just wonderful! We like to grill entrecote, lamb skewers, fish and last week we grilled prawn skewers, but they were a bit dry. 🙂 Stockholm looks irresistible now in spring!

Ditte says:
When we lived in a villa, there was a lot of grilling and on a charcoal grill, but since then it has decreased. On the balcony in the city you are not allowed to grill, completely understandable.
But I still think grilled food is good. Large prawns, chicken, halloumi, salmon, vegetables, etc. Most things can be grilled.
And, of course, the environment on your houseboat helps to make it perfect.

Across the board says:
Everything can be grilled (almost) but a favourite is probably corn on the cob and marinated mushroom halves. Usually it is the accessories that "make it" and there is a favourite; mashed banana mixed with a little crème fraise and seasoned with curry and a little salt. Goes very well with grilled meat and pork.

Marie, oh how delicious! I've also experienced shrimp getting dry when grilling them, maybe it's easy to grill them too long?
Ditte, yes, I can also understand that you are not allowed to grill on the balcony. But it is good with grilled food sometimes 🙂
I've probably never grilled corn on the cob myself, but it's really good when you get it at a restaurant! Great tips! Interesting with the accessory with the banana tube! I agree with you, often it's the accessories that make it 😉.

Yes, it's wonderful with the barbecue premiere!!! Asparagus is wonderful on the grill!!! I usually skip the cooking beforehand so that the asparagus does not become too soft, but it is a matter of taste (=
My favourite is grilling feta cheese that is turned in beaten egg and then breaded with sesame seeds! Hallumi with lemon is always a favourite!
Wishing you a wonderful and hopefully a long summer of barbecues!

BP says:
Love asparagus and Halloumi! Have eaten both in grilled form, but then it was white asparagus. However, we almost never grill, as it is not so popular to grill on the balcony. We do have barbecue facilities in the courtyard, but we never use them. When it comes to grilled food, I can actually remember holidays abroad.

Ulrica, our asparagus didn't get soft, but we almost only dipped it in the water. But maybe it can be skipped completely... Exciting with the feta cheese, I would like to try that. Thanks for the tips!
BP, we also only grill when we feel comfortable with it. Most often it has been when we have been out with the motorhome (but not so much during the 1-year trip then), but now we have a barbecue at home too! First time in my life actually 😉
