We checked out vintage boats at the 2017 boat show at Älvsjömässan in Stockholm. Wow, so many beautiful boats! We show a selection of the boats and at the same time start remembering events from the past.
I (Peter) remember when I was very small and watched the boat race on Blidö off the island. Norrtälje. Roslagsloppet was huge and started in Stockholm and went to Öregrund. In Stockholm, there was a big party and boats being launched everywhere, it was one of the biggest offshore competitions in the world in terms of the number of boats taking part. We spotted vintage boats at the 2017 boat show. Join us!
Getinge race
Its heyday was from when it started in 1962 to the early 70s. Expressen had its own newspaper about the race so that those who watched could follow it from their cottages in the archipelago. The Getingloppet (sea race) that went from Öregrund-Mariehamn was also very large with a lot of larger racing boats.
Dangerous times
It was always so exciting when they whizzed by and sounded so exciting when you were a child. Many went aground at full speed because there were only charts and many shoals were not even marked. Boats that lay and watched had to move in and be lifesavers. Those were the days, haha.
Vintage boats at the 2017 boat show
Here is a small selection of photos of boats from the 2017 boat show. Enjoy!
Does anyone else remember this? Feel free to write!
Solan says:
Now a 68+ wakes up. Of course you remember Roslagsloppet.
Are there no Riva boats at the fair? Or the luxurious Chris-Craft? It wouldn't be a bad idea to take on the Frog Sea with one of these 😉.

Peter says:
Haha, you know more about boat models than me. There are more boats but no luxury vintage ones. Nice that you remember the races so there is still a lot going on?

Solan says:
Full speed on the car...right now in Guardamar. +23 and a huge amount of sun. Curious about the "new" Freedom. The motorhome then ...

Ditte says:
I also remember Roslagsloppet and Getingloppet clearly and something we watched for many years. Always a highlight.
Fun with vintage boats but as Solan says, it is always fun to see the beautiful Riva boats, but they may not be there this year. Many boats from the past were more "real boats" and not floating high summer houses.

Peter says:
What a development with all the luxuries. I can agree that there is too little boat today and the same with motorhomes. Just luxury and some camping.

snort says:
What wonderful old beauties! Vintage cars are often seen but boats are probably not as common...

Peter says:
Nice and original. I wonder how many people got back pain in all the wooden chairs and 40 knots?

LinizTravel says:
Exciting! Is so bad on boats! But love to cruise! Have a wonderful Day! Hugs
07 March 2017 - 9:49
Peter says:
Hahaha liniz. I don't know much either but luxury cruise? You are marvellous.?

Goatfish says:
Never liked racing boats. They go too fast! Not racing cars either 😀.
But old vintage cars, that's great! Quiet street, kind of.
Sun-soaked hugs ?

Peter says:
Hi Gerd! I've never been to a Formula 1 race but they say it's cool. I'm probably more in your line, reasonably fast. Probably sounds a bit Swedish but it's nicer in the long run. Thanks for the hug and it is needed in this weather. Hugs.

I confess! I am a "Motorhome addict"! I think there are also "boat addicts". Some of these, I think, could leave most possessions behind, but not the boat. It comes before everything!

Peter says:
I think I'm basically that too. After our year in Europe, I told Helena that I could live in a house full time. I thought about warmer climates, but today in Sweden, no! It's nice to be nerdy about something because it's real feelings.

BP says:
Roslagsloppet still exists today, right? Even though I'm not a boat person, I'm of course familiar with Roslagsloppet. I must also admit that I actually love vintage boats, preferably those in mahogany, much like the cute racing boat you show, but preferably a little bigger. Imagine what a maintenance job ...
Then I laugh at the "Flush the bend" sticker on the boat in the header picture. We had these stickers on our football bags too - hahaha:-)
07 March 2017 - 12:54
Peter says:
Haha, I also remembered the decals. The boats you are talking about are Riva boats. The American ones in mahogany and nice upholstery with the V8 rumbling. We have a bunch at Pampas marina when it gets hot, and they are very nice. I do not know if Roslagsloppet exists so I am very unsure.

Ama de casa says:
What cool boats! 🙂 But I do not remember that type of boat at all. I am far too young... 😉.
07 March 2017 - 15:21
Peter says:
Then I must be a dinosaur, haha. You're the same age as Helena, right? Like 42 or something, because she does not remember. Now I feel old:-)

Matts Torebring says:
A Swiss bank manager went to a cabin in the Swedish mountains. There he stood on the woodpile for a whole week, splitting wood. He was asked why he did this. Silence! he replied. With these boats there is no silence. I would also go away. Perhaps to a "Laptop" in Norrland.
07 March 2017 - 18:40
Peter says:
Now I know you are a sailor if your brain can talk about boats. Quite fun to go to a laptop and just be. When you come to a place that is completely silent, you are shocked that it can be like that, quite strange really. we were in such a place in Vietnam when we sailed in the sugar peak islands and it was cool to experience.

Biggeros says:
Really fun to look at these veteran boats. You may think that they are in the smallest team ...
Saw an offshoreboat race between Canada/Ontario/Sarnia and USA/port Huron border. It was when we lived there in 2002. It was a mighty race and what a level of acoustics.
I haven't seen the hornet race, though.
07 March 2017 - 18:57
Peter says:
Wow! It must have been awesome to see and to hear as you write. It is probably the same sound volume as a Formula 1 race. The boats then, yes to crawl into a doghouse and go at 40 knots, it must be an experience in itself, haha.
08 March 2017 - 7:46
Biggeros says:
Yes, I can imagine that you can compare this race to Formula 1. My husband who loves Formula 1 should know =) It can't be fun to fly with such a small boat. Today they are well protected.

Netti Starby says:
What cool boats and I would love to take a trip on the lake this summer 😀 Hugs!
07 March 2017 - 20:05
Peter says:
Hi Netti! Being on the lake is so cosy and I think you should invest in a canoe, haha. I was just kidding! You can do anything if you put your mind to it. If you don't know anyone who has a boat you can snuggle up with. Take a weekend just because or you can come here on a sunny summer day.
08 March 2017 - 7:49
Marina says:
Well, boats are not really my thing, at least not the fast ones. I like sitting and bobbing in an oak tree, or paddling forward in a canoe and listening to the silence. It's just not as easy to do that in a boat with an engine bouncing on the waves...
08 March 2017 - 5:21
Peter says:
When you stop, it gets quiet:-). The boat is probably meant to take you to places that are as beautiful as aeroplanes. You have to get a boat with canoes and you have everything. Strange that it is always associated with luxury boats that you should have a jet ski with you instead of a canoe. I agree with you that silence is a luxury.
