Diving in Malta at last! Peter got the chance to dive in Marsalforn in Gozo, Malta. He got to do a private dive with an instructor, as his diving licence is not yet complete. This dive in Malta was Peter's first open water dive - according to him very cool and a really good experience. Join us for scuba diving in Malta in text and pictures!

16-degree water
When it's 16 degrees in the water, it's not very warm ... The instructor had a dry suit, but you need a special course to dive with a dry suit and Peter hasn't taken that course. At least he got an extra thick wetsuit and then he took another wetsuit with short arms and legs on top of the other one. And he didn't actually freeze!
Good diving instructor
Peter did the dive with a company in Gozo called Calypso Diving Centre. We understand that there are many dive companies abroad (perhaps especially in Asia?) that are willing to compromise on things like safety to make money.
On the contrary, they seemed to be very carefully. There was a thorough briefing beforehand and all the rules and safety procedures were followed. Peter dived alone with the instructor, who made sure they were in good contact with each other at all times.
Diving in Malta - Amazing experience
What was it like? Well, I (Peter) will tell you myself. We were down for 42 minutes at a depth of nine metres and the first 15 minutes were spent finding a rhythm and balance. In one pool I had 4kg of weights to get the right balance and be able to lie still in the water.
Now I had a thicker wetsuit and in salt water you float more, so 14 kg weights were right for me in the end. We saw quite a few small fish and a ray. It was a great experience to be able to do this and I'm a bit lucky you could say.
Underwater photography and filming
The Nikon 360 camera can be used underwater down to 30 metres, but it was incredibly difficult to get good films and pictures (or maybe I haven't learned how to do it yet). It was possible to film, and most of the images in this post have been cut from the films.
However, the photos did not turn out as they usually do. There are other thicker lenses on the camera when you use it under water, which made it black between the pictures instead of merging. I do not complain about a camera that costs less than 5000 SEK and is fun in every way and easy to take with you. It was cool to be able to take the camera under water and we got to take photos home!

I love diving and being able to see the beautiful world below the surface. In the 90s I went on a diving trip to Mexico and loved it, but then unfortunately there was not much more diving for me as the climbing took over. However, it is something I would love to take up again.
Have a nice weekend!

Diving in Mexico sounds cool! Climbing ... it's probably not really what we'll do today, but something that seems scary, haha. Will return!

What fun with diving but 14kg sounds like a lot. ?
Photography under water is very difficult, especially with the white balance. Hope you have a wonderful time.

Helena says:
Haha, he apparently wants to float to the surface ... 😉 And you float especially well when the water is as salty as here ...!

Congratulations to Peter! What fun that it went well! And now Peter will probably get stuck in this with diving because it is so cool and really fun. With a completed diving certificate, it will be even more fun.
I think the pictures were good, always fun to shoot underwater and film but not easy right away. I have previously dived a lot both in Asia, Australia, USA and in Europe and think that the ones we rented equipment from were careful. And with all your own documentation from dives made, you eventually feel safer.
Unfortunately, I have not renewed my cert. and it is doubtful today whether I would get a licence from a doctor (now it's snorkelling instead).
Wishing you continued good days in Malta.

BIG CONGRATULATIONS on your first real dive and in my eyes absolutely superb pictures. Like the pictures with black frames - a bit of nostalgia there. You know the 1970s and 1980s with slide maps;-)
Go ahead and enjoy!

Go Peter!!! I think you are both brave and very talented plus the pictures were really good 🙂 Not easy as a beginner, in open water as well, that along with everything else to keep track of, also have a camera in their hands. 16 degrees I had never managed, only tropical waters for my part, but today the diving is put on the shelf. We worked with Calypso Diving when we sold diving holidays to Malta. They are good and I believe and hope that all diving centres in Malta maintain a high level of safety.
If you have now started diving, many exciting experiences await you under the water surface, maybe you can get Helena to join you too.
08 April 2017 - 14:57
Helena says:
Thank you for your comment Anita! Unfortunately, I don't think he will take me with him. I absolutely understand that it is a fascinating experience to dive, but I am far too afraid to be underwater ... Glad you collaborated with Calypso diving! Peter was very pleased! Perceived them as both very nice and very serious.

Wow! It looks amazing, but like you Helena, I skip that with diving. Fun with Segway too, saw that it was in Valletta, and would like to try, but maybe not right there! So glad I looked at your tips in Valletta, we were in the cool church, which I would never have done if you had not recommended it! Even cooler was the noble family's house Casa Rocca Piccola, got a great tour around the house and visited the parrot! So I thank you so much for those tips!
