Thinking the motorhome season is over? We think it's perfect to experience autumn in a motorhome. It's a bit of a shame that many campsites and pitches are already closed in October, but some are open all year round, like Jogersö camping in Oxelösund where we are now.
We've done a lot of work at our computers this weekend, but we've also spent time walking in nature, playing with Peter's drone and, of course, enjoying good food. We have actually tried a (for us) completely new fish.
Beautiful autumn colours
Autumn is really full of colours: green grass, yellow trees and red berries. When we walk around the areas around Jogersö camping the ground is full of mushrooms, blueberries and fallen small forest apples. I like that it's so easy to get out into nature in Sweden and that there are these kinds of places to go. We have to say that it's perfect to experience autumn in a motorhome!
Bread and olive oil
When Peter was in Greece he brought home olive oil. What a difference there is between olive oil from southern Europe and the one you find in the shops here at home! A little olive oil on the plate and then dip a good bread in it - perfect as an appetiser or snack! Peter bought a Greek farmhouse bread that was really good and stayed fresh for an unusually long time.
We have tested a new fish
While shopping for food for the weekend, Peter found a completely 'new' fish in the supermarket. Vendace is mainly harvested for its roe, but it can also be sold for eating. A packet cost ten kronor - so worth trying!
Peter marinated the vendace in salt, olive oil, dill and grated lemon peel. Then we tried two different cooking methods: 1) on the grill and 2) dipped in rye flour and fried hard in the frying pan. What did it taste like? Pretty much like herring. The variant when we fried them dipped in rye flour was clearly the best, then they became a little crispy and tasty as a small "snack".
Ruth in Virginia says:
It was the whitefish I wrote about earlier - the fish we ate so much.
during WWII. Fished in the lakes of Hemikring.
Beautiful autumn - here too. / if interested in autumn pictures,
check out Channal on blogspot. She has just as nice a route to
work as Helena. 🙂

Helena says:
Peter also grew up eating whitefish, but it's not a fish I'm used to, and it's hardly available in the shops. The vendace is much smaller and tastes different. As I understand it, they are two different fish. And thanks for the tip about Channal, have looked at her nice autumn pictures now! 🙂

Birgitta in Umeå says:
I prefer the roe instead of its producer, the vendace. Vendace is often ground and used for animal feed, such as mink. My boxer was allergic to meat so we bought mink food at the slaughterhouse.
But oh so expensive with lion's roe. It costs about 1000 konor per kilo! And this year it is up to 1200 SEK, as the supply of vendace has been poor so far.
Then we are kept with whitefish roe at about half the price. At Obbola's old saltworks we can buy the early whitefish roe, which in size and flavour resembles exactly the onion roe. And it is very fresh!
On a chilly autumn day, eating a baked potato topped with sour cream, whitefish roe and red onion is great!

Helena says:
The clerk told me about the mink when Peter bought the fish. According to what she told me, there are new EU rules that mean that MSN is no longer allowed to take fish and use it as animal food, and therefore they are trying new uses 😉 But I agree that roe and whitefish roe are a highlight! 🙂

Lennart says:
Lovely warm days now.
I don't have to worry about water in the motorhome, we have electricity in the car park but it's difficult if you're not at home.

Helena says:
It's nice right now, but of course it's getting colder and colder ...

Matts Torebring says:
Autumn, with all the colours of nature and motorhome trips, is so relaxing at this time of year. All obligations are reduced at home.

I really agree that it is relaxing to get out with the motorhome! This weekend we needed, so to speak ...

Karin Eklund says:
The vendace is widely used in Eastern Finland. People like to smoke it and it tastes really good. A real highlight. There is a big difference between whitefish and vendace. The whitefish gets big while the vendace is always small. A vendace is always small 🙂 .
The rum is first class.
15 October 2017 - 8:41
Helena says:
Interesting that vendace is popular in Eastern Finland! And yes, I have also understood that there is a big difference between whitefish and vendace.

Ama de casa says:
Vendace was a common food fish for the seals when I worked at Skansen. Cheap because it was kind of predatory for the sake of the roe. If you had some time, you could scrape together some leftover roe from them as well... However, I never tried the fish itself. Herring is too bony for me, and the vendace is just as you say reminiscent of the herring 🙂.
15 October 2017 - 9:05
Helena says:
I am not entirely surprised that vendace was used as food for the seals, apparently it has been given to mink as well. But if the clerk in the shop was right, there are new EU rules that prohibit the harvesting of fish for use as animal feed. The vendace wasn't bad, but if you don't like herring, you probably won't like vendace either.

Marina says:
Lovely autumn pictures! I have (as far as I know!) not tasted, but at least never cooked it myself, but it might be worth a try.
15 October 2017 - 9:27
Helena says:
It's kind of fun to try different types of fish! The vendace was much like herring, possibly a bit more fun as a "snack" because they are so small.

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
I whisk together wheat flour and water and dip the fish in it, and then I put it on breadcrumbs and fry it. Fish is so good.
Yes, it's autumn now.

Isn't fish good? And breaded can be good sometimes!

Steel city anna says:
Looks lovely with autumn colours around a campsite. The problem is that it often rains and it becomes a little less lovely then 🙂 agree that olive oil is a whole science and the flavour really varies. Love to dip bread in olive oil.

Helena says:
Yes, the weather plays a big role ...! It rains quite often in Sweden, but not always 😉.

Birgitta in Umeå says:
Only in Greece is the unblended Greek olive oil available.
Yes, there are some importers (e.g. CretanDeli) and individuals who also bring in 'pure' olive oil.
Italy, for example, mixes its own olive oil with imports from other countries. So there and in other countries you can't get the pure olive and virgin oil.
The different regions of Greece are competing for 'the best olive oil here'. I can't tell the difference between the oil of the Massif and the oil of Messinia.
Olive oil is best bought in Greece by hotel owners and others, i.e. own production. We often get oil and always take it home with us.
Several islands and the mainland also "compete" to see who has Greece's oldest olive trees. There are many of them
15 October 2017 - 10:16
Helena says:
Glad you know so much about the olive oil in Greece Birgitta! We do not, but on the other hand, we notice that the olive oil Peter brought from Greece tastes very good! 🙂

Ditte says:
Nice to have a change of scenery! And even if you have some work, it's still nice to see something different from the usual.
I don't like herring, too much bone, so I would personally skip the vendace.
As for olive oil, we always bring home good Spanish olive oil and it cannot be compared to the one bought at home. However, the "halls" sell some other varieties that are really good.
Wishing you a great Sunday.

Ruth in Virginia says:
It is clear that I am a professional at gutting herring,
because there weren't many bones left after I handled them.
The kilos of herring that I gutted, when my mother had the
food service. If there are any bones left, they are so soft, that they
easily slips down. - Smoked whitefish, not pollack, is a delicacy.
Speaking of smoked fish - what does kipper come from (like)?
15 October 2017 - 15:26
Helena says:
Ruth, is it really possible to remove the bones from a herring? They are so small and soft that you usually eat them ...? Or maybe it's only the larger ones you remove then! Böckling is hot-smoked herring or herring. I agree that it is delicious!
15 October 2017 - 15:41
Helena says:
Ditte, yes, changing environment does a lot, even if you continue to work 😉 And surely there is a difference in the quality of the olive oils sold here as well.

Autumn can be nice if you can get away from all the rain!
On nice sunny days we like to go out with the motorhome.
But soon it will go into winter storage!
Take care.....

Helena says:
This weekend has been super nice! Not as much fun if it rains ... For us it will be one more trip before the winter rest.

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
The motorhome is set for winter storage and right now it feels good. I have never encountered rinsing but fried herring with mashed potatoes and homemade lingonberry jam is a highlight that we unfortunately eat too rarely. Greek olive oil is a real highlight and of course there were a couple of bottles home from a local producer in Crete.
15 October 2017 - 15:21
Helena says:
I agree that fried herring is good! We never cook it ourselves, but I choose it at lunch restaurants from time to time.

BP says:
What lovely pictures and the drone picture is WOW!!!!
Soon you will also be a food blog;-) I have never eaten vendace, but since I don't like herring, ...
However, I love smoked whitefish:-)
PS. Like Peter, we also import "real" olive oil from Spain. There is no comparison with the one we have here at home. DS.
15 October 2017 - 18:21
Helena says:
Glad you like the drone picture! 🙂 There is a completely different perspective on life with a drone...! Olive oil should probably be imported directly, I think, if you have the opportunity.
