It's Monday again and time for travel news! This week we can report that Rhodes and Prague are two really hot travel destinations, and that the Philippine island of Boracay will be closed for "rehabilitation" for six months. In addition, we can reveal that Swedes celebrating holidays abroad would like the weather to be bad... at home in Sweden.

Rhodes is this summer's hottest destination
Rhodes in Greece is the most popular destination this summer, according to a survey by the sun travel specialist eBeach.se. The most popular days to travel are 27 June, followed by 19 June or 28 June. Here is the list of the summer's most popular destinations:
- Rhodes, Greece
- Mallorca, Spain
- Costa Brava, Spain
- Antalya, Turkey
- Costa del Sol, Spain
Most popular big cities in the East
Weekend getaways and mini-breaks are a growing trend, and travelling to interesting cities is a good fit. According to Ticket's booking statistics, many major cities in eastern Europe are hot this year, and Warsaw accounts for one of the largest increases (+82.2 per cent), putting the city in 6th place. It is also good to see that Zagreb comes in at number 10 - a city we like a lot! Here are the most booked Eastern European cities this year (click for tips - we've been there!):
Active city holidays attract
Training trips and active holidays are two of this year's hottest trends, according to a survey conducted by SIFO on behalf of Resia. Many active travellers are now choosing to combine the trends in major European cities such as Berlin and Prague. In addition to being a health trend, it is about discovering cities in a different way than before - perhaps from the saddle of a bicycle or with yoga in a park.
Holidaymakers want bad weather at home
Almost four out of ten Swedes hope for bad weather at home when they go on holiday, according to a new survey from Ving. The survey shows that 51 percent check the weather at home when they are on holiday, that 21 percent prefer bad weather at home and that 29 percent have caught themselves enjoying the bad weather at home while on holiday.
To "meet the need", Ving ran a campaign with a weather machine where tourists on a beach in Phuket could experience the weather at home in real time - to make the most of their Thai holiday.
The island of Boracay in the Philippines closes down
The fantastic holiday island Boracay in the Philippines, closes to tourists for six months, reports CNN Philippines. The reason is the mountain of rubbish and damage to the environment, which has turned the water into a 'cesspool'. The closure comes into effect on 26 April and means a total ban on tourists.

But boy, do we sound jealous.
Just coming up with the idea of a home weather machine, my goodness ?
09 April 2018 - 7:08
Helena says:
Right? But maybe you just think that you are glad that you travelled away from the storm. Because you wouldn't wish bad weather on people back home ...!?

Kenneth Risberg says:
Home weather machine? hmm April Fool's joke or?
09 April 2018 - 7:33
Helena says:
Haha yes, that would be a pretty good April Fool's joke! However, the press release came on 4 April ...

Travel Linda says:
Why care what the weather is like somewhere other than where you are? Do you need some kind of support for your conscience because you're travelling or do you want to gloat and rub it in for those left at home?
09 April 2018 - 8:01
Helena says:
One might wonder ... 😉 😉

Hehe, weather machine? Are you sure it's not 1 April?
09 April 2018 - 8:47
Helena says:
Haha, well not quite sure, but you're not usually fooled on 4 April 😉.

Ha, interesting that you check the weather at home when you are away. I admit that I do it too!

Ama de casa says:
Haha! What a festive idea! I guess this proves the point that gloating is the only true...
But I myself am one of the 53 per cent who do not begrudge others good weather. However, it was a bit sour when you had gone on a sun holiday and there was lousy weather where you were, while Sweden showed itself from its very best side. Then you knew that you had chosen the wrong time to go 😀.

Are people really so jealous that they wish bad weather on those who have not had the opportunity to travel?
On the other hand, we have travelled by motorhome in Europe for three weeks with two days without rain, while the sun was shining here at home. Not much fun, but we still had a great trip.
There are many wonderful weekend destinations if you look eastwards. We probably intend to visit some of them in the future. Right now, only Prague and Budapest have had a couple of visits each.

Just read on a press release from Resia that London is at the top in terms of "minibreaks". Have just come from there and it is a cool city in every way. "Still going strong". But it is quite expensive so the capitals in the east are better off in terms of price. Warsaw I have left and Moscow I skip.
Glad that Rhodes has become popular again because it was in the 60s and 70s and I was there many times. Turkey does not attract me at all, but has been there several times but feels no need to go back. But it is still cheap.
It's a funny thing about weather and misbehaviour.
Particularly pleased that Spain takes three places at the top.

The weather machine sounds like an April Fool's joke actually. Of course you want it to be cold and miserable at home when you are on holiday where it is 25 degrees. But I would not go as far as a home weather machine;-)
Very good that Boracay is closed for 6 months. Too bad for the hotel and restaurant industry, but the decision is brave and good!
