When it comes to roads, Poland is building like crazy, and it needs it. In places it is a patchwork that Sweden would not even approve as a road. The difference between Poland and the Czech Republic is that the Czech Republic has small roads and lower speeds, while Poland has higher speeds and much more traffic, on the same small roads. So forget about being in a hurry! Just go between 50 and 80 kilometres per hour and enjoy life.
Roads in Poland and the Czech Republic
We drove during the day and we wouldn't recommend driving at night because the road conditions are not the same as in Sweden. You shouldn't be surprised when you set the GPS to a distance of 20 kilometres, for example, and it should take four and a half hours. That's about 45 kilometres per hour on average, but that's how it is.
Czech Republic is very beautiful to drive in, so you don't want to speed there anyway. There are a lot of beautiful castles and mansions in both the Poland and the Czech Republic, which adds more to the journey.
Roads in Germany and Italy
Motorway i Germany everyone with caravans and motorhomes knows how boring it is, but it's for transport. Fortunately, there are many nice rest areas along the way, so it's easy to make small stops.
I Italy they are sometimes not very clever in traffic. No one gives way, no one stops to let cars or pedestrians pass, they only think of themselves and scream and honk. The smaller roads are also narrow, winding and full of dead ends, not exactly adapted for large motorhomes ...

Do you know if the road network in Poland has changed since you wrote this post in 2009?
We are thinking of driving through Poland down to the Balkans. The difference between driving Poland-Slovakia-Hungary-Romania, and driving through Germany-Czech Republic-Hungary-Romania is about 80 kilometres. But at the same time you don't want to break the car on bad roads.

Patrick, we have been to Poland a few times since 2009. They build new roads all the time, and the new roads are very nice. However, where there are still old roads, they can be really bad. If you drive south through the country, there are several new motorways that are really good, but I can't say exactly which stretches. The section we think has been the worst is actually along the northern coast, i.e. from Swinoujscie to Gdansk. Maybe this map gives a little more info:
