The sky is dark and the cold is pervasive and you realise that this is happening. after something. A father and son walk alone on a road, hoping to eventually reach the 'coast'. The dialogue between the father and the boy is short and almost staccato, and yet the words strike mercilessly. Listen to this:
After a while the boy said: There are no birds. There aren't, are there?

Yes, it is. Only in books.
