A little 'bold'

At the time, it was considered a bit too bold, and it was somewhat overshadowed by its sister novel Jane Eyre. And indeed it is a dramatic story full of desperate love and dramatic death. In this day and age, it seems almost unrealistic that so many people die so young. But if you read about the lives of the Bronte sisters, it seems to be part of everyday life at that time, even if you were upper class.

Tough times

Her mother died early from cancer and two sisters died of tuberculosis when they were children. The only brother died from substance abuse and when Emily attended his funeral she caught a cold and developed pneumonia. And died. It was 1848, a year after Wuthering Heights was published. Emily was 30 years old at the time... So we're doing pretty well today! But if you feel like sobbing a little bit in front of the TV, this is just the thing!
