A great way to travel is to read. A book has the ability to convey the smells and sounds of the land over there. In addition, the book often manages to take you where you never get to go as a tourist; you get a peek behind the scenes.
5 books to take you to China
The perfect combination is to read while travelling ... But if no trip is booked, a book at home will also go a long way. Here I present five really exciting trips to China.
- Empress Orchid by Anchee Min - a poor girl's path to becoming one of the Emperor's wives in the Forbidden City in 1851.
- Wild swans by Jung Chang - a classic tale of three generations of women in a changing China
- Kingdom of the daughters by Yang Erche Namu - about a girl growing up in the matriarchal society of the Mosuo people
- Red prosecutor by Xiao Rundcrantz - a defected prosecutor, now living in Sweden, gives a brutal picture of the communist justice system.
- Babes in Beijing by Rachel deWoskin - a 21-year-old American moves to Beijing and gets a starring role in one of China's major TV soap operas.
Johanna Siljehagen says:
Will be somewhat cheaper than always buying a plane ticket and all that entails. Love books like these.

Exciting tips, I have read The Kingdom of the Daughters, I thought it was really good. Red Prosecutor is here at home and waiting to be read, and the others are going up on my wish list 🙂.
