New Zealand by Motorhome 4 - Mt Cook and Akaroa

This is the fourth and final part of our little story about the 2006/2007 motorhome trip in New Zealand. The trip continued on the South Island and ended in Christchurch, where we left the campervan and flew to Auckland and then back home... One of the best trips we ever made!

Quad bike ride

New Zealand is truly the land of adventure and on the South Island we tried, among other things, a quad bike ride. All four of us thought this was really fun!

We tried quad bikes - fun!

Glacial lake at Mt Cook

Then we headed for the amazing landscape around Mt Cook. Here we took a boat trip on the glacier lake, which was really an amazing experience. When you sit in the small boat and look up at the huge ice, you realise how powerful nature is, and how small you are in comparison.

At Mount Cook, it was like coming to a whole new climate - again.

Mighty to experience a glacier and a glacial lake

Swimming with dolphins

At the end of the trip we also had the chance to swim with dolphins in Akaroa. The dolphins here are called Hector's dolphin and are only found here. You are not allowed to touch them, but we were allowed to make sounds with rocks and then they came very close on their own. Obviously they enjoyed swimming with humans!

It's great that the dolphins choose to come to the boats, just because they think it's fun!

We have also written about the first parts of our motorhome trip in New Zealand. The trip started in Auckland, where we went horse riding and visited the Sky Tower. We then visited the volcanic White Island before heading to Rotorua for adventures ranging from seeing geysers to rolling down hills in a 'zorb'.

We also visited the "Bridge to nowhere" before heading over to the South Island. Here we experienced the Abel Tasman National Park and went whale watching in Kaikoura. You can read about the previous adventures here.
