Aftonbladet's reporter experienced what is perhaps the most worrying aspect of travelling - being robbed. He has now put together a list of 10 tips to reduce the risk of getting into trouble. We think the tips are good and actually follow most of them. It's that jewellery thing, though ...
Tips for safer travelling
Here are ten tips from Aftonbladet article:
- Travel insurance
- Order the European Health Insurance Card
- Copy the passport
- Keep in touch with family and friends
- Don't write on paper you don't understand
- Leave the jewellery at home
- Keep track of your valuables
- Spread the travel money over several cards
- Get a phone service/box and move money between accounts
- Learn some words in the local language
How do you usually protect yourself? Have you ever been robbed or stolen while travelling?
Leena says:
Travelling with a motorhome requires that you try to reduce the risk of being robbed. We follow these tips but also make sure that the motorhome is as clean as possible from things that can be stolen, nothing is lying around, alarms and straps between the seats in the driver's cabin.
Not robbed but about to be, it was really scary. Rest area just outside Milan, we saw what was going on so we left. After that we always check what it looks like at rest areas before we get out, lonely, young guys in sports cars and if there are several of them then we don't stay.
Now our campervan season has started, yay:)

Leena, yes, there are some extra things to consider regarding the motorhome! We also have alarms, both on the doors and motion alarms. We also have a safe, which we bolted to the motorhome... Scary to be close to a robbery! Glad to hear that your season has started! We'll be there soon too...

Haven't moved out for anything yet...except for a sick thing in Bali. Had hung some hand washed laundry out to dry overnight. The jeans and panties were still there in the morning, but not my bras. And then we stayed at a nice resort. Hm....

Ninni, sure, it wouldn't be fun. But on the other hand, it is very boring to live life based on all the "IFs". There are so many "IFs" that will never happen. You can never be 100 % sure, but I believe in protecting yourself with a little common sense, and then relax and enjoy yourself.
🙂
Johanna, well either an old man with a special fondness for collecting bras or there was a girl at the resort who thought you had unusually nice bras... just in her size.... sometimes you wonder about people....

That's what I'm a little worried about then with the caravanning that what IF you get hit by "pirates" but at the same time we had a break-in in the apartment when we were in Spain many years ago as well. Then my mother's acquaintance got rid of her handbag at a market in Malaga, I think it was. Also for a double-digit number of years ago.... Not funny!!!

We've been travelling for 30 years with a caravan and now a motorhome but have never had an incident. But you never know, so we try to "tidy" away things that may be desirable. But of course there is concern especially now when we are considering being out for six months. The 10 points were good, something to follow.

Helly says:
When I was younger and travelling alone in Asia, I had a secret inner pocket that I sewed, where I kept my passport and large currencies.
I have learnt over the years to always carry cash and not just cards. It's also good to have more than one card, as you said.
I think you should listen to your gut feeling and use your common sense, then things usually go well.
In Naples, for example, I always take off my watch and other jewellery before getting into a taxi or walking around the city. Stupid to tempt fate ...

Maggan, how wonderful that you are thinking about being out for six months! Where do you want to go?
Helly, yes, you should have cash too! We also tried to sew in a secret pocket when we travelled through Asia, but I think we ended up finding it a bit complicated!

Wow, what a clever idea! We usually copy the passports and put the copy in another bag, but I never thought to scan and email the copy!

Just a small addition.
Make a copy of the passport, scan it and send it to your own email address, so you can always access the copy even if you lose everything!

Good tip to scan your passports and keep them in your computer. maybe you don't need to carry a lot of paper copies at all, you can access your email wherever you are in Europe.
What do you think about not having paper copies?
Leena;)

Veiken says:
You always have the passport number and if a printout is not enough, you can get help. Perhaps from a Swedish embassy or similar. It is only where there is no computer or connection that it can be a bit tricky. You can't always wear both braces and belts, unfortunately!
