Last summer we got lost several times in Italy. Each time it was because our GPS led us onto roads that no longer existed ... Now we would like to get an update, but it costs £3,200!!!!
Update your GPS or buy a new one?
A new GPS costs 1000 - 5000 SEK and often includes updates for two years, so why not buy a new one? Today we have a Pioneer stereo with GPS. Having two devices instead does not seem so attractive.
Moreover, a new GPS has a maximum screen of 5 inches, while we have a 7-inch screen. So now the question is: An update for 3200 SEK or get lost in Europe? What do you think? Do you use GPS? Have you bought updates?
Antonia says:
Yes, you probably have to ;P

Believe it or not. We use a plain old map!!! Hahaha... It works just fine!

Tina, and it's certainly cheaper, I promise! If you're the map reader, you can then say (in a firm voice) "Turn right now!" Then it will be just like a GPS, only cheaper.
😉
Although I am a rather poor map reader...

Yes, we have GPS, and think they are great! A little fun also to sometimes be able to alternate a little and set up, for example, avoid motorways so you get to see something other than straight boring roads etc.

GPS is a jungle. I'm thinking of changing it myself, I was abroad with an un-updated GPS last year, never again. Buy new or not?

We have our GPS with us but I always follow the map, which also worked in Bosnia and Montenegro.
If you check the map, you can find many nice detours.
My GPS is two years old and I have never updated it.

When I first moved to the US, I used GPS everywhere, otherwise I probably wouldn't have ventured out. In Sweden we have a GPS but we never take it with us, it's relatively easy to find your way in Sweden and the signposting is great.
Here in the Philippines we have no GPS, I don't even know if there is anyone to take this chaos? Here the problem is not to find but more to fit in the traffic.

Yes, here it is hopeless with GPS, you have to constantly have new updates or it does not work at all (there is no drawing).
Very strange that a new GPS costs the same or even less than an update...

Like you, I have a built-in GPS in my car. I use it sometimes, but I have to say that I'm just as happy to follow google maps and directions.
Sounds good to buy a new one in your place now that you're travelling in Europe. It sounds like you'll get a lot of use out of it!

When we bought the motorhome there was already a GPS installed, I don't remember what it's called but it's excellent. If we only trusted it, we probably wouldn't get far. Fortunately, I like to read the map so I always follow along to keep track of where we are, then it is easier to find good places to hitchhike if you read the map.

I don't travel much and have never used a GPS.
I use a paper map, but as I said, I only stay in central Sweden as well. 😀

I think you can find free updates online. I don't remember how the last visitors did it, but they didn't pay anything at all. But clearly better to buy a new one than to pay these huge sums.

We use GPS. At first I was pissed off because I felt dethroned as a map reader. But now I've come to like "Aunt Tom-tom" more and more (even though I sometimes claim she's wrong, telling us how to drive - and getting it wrong...).
We bought the Western Europe map upgrade last year when we were going to camp out in Greece for a sailing trip and return. It cost 50 euros, which was quite affordable, actually.

We use Mapfactor FREE, which is perfect for netbooks (with a USB GPS antenna) as it downloads openstreetmaps maps that can be run without an internet connection. There is also a beta version for Android smartphones.
