When travelling in the north of Sweden you are likely to be hit by: mosquitoes. All blood-sucking creatures are for some reason very fond of me (check the picture), but less so of Peter... I therefore feel that I have to prepare myself!
Tips for avoiding/relieving mosquito bites
Here are some tips for avoiding or relieving mosquito bites, which I found on the county council's online health pages. What do you think works? Do you have any other "housewife" tips?
- Wear clothes that cover as much of your body as possible.
- Wear light-coloured clothing - mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours.
- Apply mosquito repellent to the areas you cannot cover with clothing.
- Use mosquito nets for prams and cots.
- Take allergy medication with antihistamines for prevention, to reduce itching and swelling.
- Relieve mosquito bites with cold water, an ice cube wrapped in cloth, alsol alcohol or cooling balm.
- Apply weak hydrocortisone ointment to the mosquito bites.

Ajajajaj... Not funny!
I'm just as attractive as you when it comes to mosquitoes and other bloodthirsty creatures. Anders says that I am his best mosquito repellent...
I wear mosquito repellent and long sleeves and legs and socks. The thinnest model if it's hot.
Gets bitten anyway.
sv: Yes, there are other people camping. But motorhomes and caravans are in the majority 🙂.

Mosquitoes bite because of the blood. I hardly get any mosquito bites at all.

Anders and Birgitta says:
When we were in the Camargue delta last early summer, I was terribly bitten. The bites were so small you couldn't see them. The worst was on the scalp. The bites sawed themselves off so the hair became a sticky mess. I had to get up in the middle of the night and rinse my hair to relieve the discomfort. It was the worst thing I've ever experienced, so I understand how you feel. Needless to say, Anders didn't get any bites.

Mosquitoes are an unwelcome animal.
I've heard that you can rub yourself with lemon.
Happy holidays

Oh oh oh oh!
This is what I get in Thailand almost every year, in the beginning, before I get colour 🙂

Ouch, can really imagine how it itches... no fun.
Apply plenty of mosquito repellent in the early evening. Check that there are no mosquitoes inside the bed, in clothes, etc.
Take antihistamine tablets too.
Good luck to you. 😉

Oh, you poor thing! I probably have HIV or some other fatal blood disease because the mosquitoes never want my blood... I thank you and bow but feel all the more sorry for you who are being attacked!

Jadu, tell me what to try for housewife tips. Some say that eating a lot of garlic will help but I eat garlic most of the time but still I get a lot of mosquito bites....
My sister also says that she doesn't get many mosquito bites since she started drinking Berocca every day, but I haven't tested it.
Try .... if nothing else, vitamins are never wrong. 🙂

Oh dear, that's not funny! I have experience with sand fleas (maybe it's the same thing?) from the Amazon. Almost scratched me to death! A travel buddy who is a doctor had an ointment with morphine that calmed down. Do not know how easy / difficult it is to get it here at home ... for him it was not so difficult. Otherwise, when it comes to mosquitoes, comprehensive clothing is one of the better protections. The best tip is of course to stay at home but who wants that. 🙂
P.S. Some people smell better in mosquito noses, that's just the way it is. I unfortunately also belong to that category. 🙁

Yes, that's what some of us look like up here too, even though there are mosquitoes, gnats and "swine" that have been around. I myself use the method of not going out and if I have to, it is long sleeves, long trousers and preferably a hat as well.
I have heard that yeast tablets are good but have not tried them. Had bought a cap with a mosquito net for the face and neck a long time ago, but it felt a bit confined.
If you have been bitten by mosquitoes, Salubrin can relieve the itching, and it will also relieve you if you have been bitten by stinging nettles. Salubrin can be bought in well-stocked supermarkets.

Ah, thanks for all the tips! I guess you have to dress like a beekeeper and drench yourself with everything from garlic to lemon and stock up on some morphine and antihistamine tablets....
😉
Pumita, maybe they are called sand fleas? I might be misremembering...

Where in Norrland will you be? Here in Umeå I do not think there are so many mosquitoes, so I do not have to think about mosquito repellent and the like..thank goodness 🙂

Camilla, we will be travelling around. We first go inland (from Stockholm) and up along the border with Norway. Then we go towards Piteå and continue back towards Stockholm along the east coast.
If we avoid mosquitoes for part of the trip, that's great!
🙂
