Visiting Berbers in Morocco's Atlas Mountains

Today we visited Berbers in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. We booked a minibus trip from Marrakech with a guide in French, a stop with a Berber family, climbing up to a waterfall and (of course) ten thousand vendors who wanted to sell necklaces, pots, knives, fine stones, herbs, spices ... you name it.

Towards the Atlas Mountains

As you leave Marrakech and drive towards the Atlas Mountains, you'll notice that it keeps getting colder and colder. Perhaps it's not surprising that it's chilly on a mountain range that has its highest peak at over 4000 metres above sea level. We all put on sweaters and the thickest jackets we had in our packs. Then we have to say that it was really nice in the sun!

Berber

We drove through several Berber villages and everywhere we met people who either herded their animals or wanted to sell us necklaces. The Berbers have lived in the Atlas Mountains since 2400 BC. According to our guide, they have not changed much in their lifestyle, although in recent years they have acquired a gas stove. However, what the guide shows in the picture is a kind of Berber-style sauna.

Nature and waterfalls

On the tour we also got to see a lot of beautiful nature. In one place we stayed a little longer, and here we had time to climb up to a waterfall. Together with a lunch break at a restaurant, it was a nice full day trip.
