We are home from Budapest and back at work... We can definitely recommend Budapest for a cosy city break! Here are some summarised impressions and some tips for those who are thinking of going there.
Table of contents
Fantastic architecture
Everywhere you look, you'll see a powerful new building with a beautiful facade, majestic columns and beautiful sculptures. There are plenty of attractions here, but in fact almost every building is an attraction.
Nice mix of East and West
Budapest retains some of its Eastern European feel, but is also a modern city that is easy to travel in. Older people don't always know English, but most younger people speak it easily.
Good food at good prices
From the goulash soup at the neighbourhood restaurant to the foie gras starter at the fine dining restaurant -... Hungarian food tastes really good. Going out to eat is affordable and often really cheap. However, the wine lists offer wines in all price ranges, so if you want to increase your bill, no problem ...
Great live music
Many, many restaurants, pubs and nightclubs offer live music: jazz, blues, rock or classical. You're not spoilt for choice at home ...
Ideal for baths and spas
We booked a luxury spa hotelat an almost unbelievably low price, where we enjoyed swimming and relaxing. And then there are all the famous bathing in Budapest of course: such as Gellertbad and Szécsénybad.
Fraudulent taxi drivers
The only negative thing we have to mention about Budapest is the taxi drivers. Many seem to cheat tourists if they can, preferably properly. We learnt this the hard way when we needed a doctor's appointment in Hungary. Ask the hotel to order a taxi or negotiate hard and stubbornly.

Exciting to read about Budapest. Sounds cosy and nice.
Strange that taxi drivers would be the only ones in the tourism industry who would cheat the tourists, could it be so?
Worth investigating ;)!

Annelie, well, we don't know that, of course... There may be more scammers somewhere. But this thing with the taxi drivers was so obvious. The hotel staff warned us and the Aftonbladet guide also contained a warning. Then we were involved in getting the price of 14,500 forints on a route that was shorter than a route that had previously cost 2,500 forints....

I've been to Budapest once when I was travelling by train and we stayed at the home of a friend who also lives in Sweden. It's really nice there, but even then we were cheated by the taxi driver 😉.

Did you need a special guidebook or did you manage with the internet? I think Hasse Nylén: Budapest beyond the tourist trails is a goldmine.
Thanks for all the tips - hope we get away this spring. Nice to get such a good hotel tip. It can otherwise take hours to search. As you describe Budapest, the city is very reminiscent of Prague.

Agnes in Lund, we had no guidebook, only Aftonbladet's Budapest guide and the Internet. But in retrospect I regretted not having a guidebook. It would have given more!
