We sometimes 'city camp', which means parking the campervan in the centre of a city and sleeping there. Sometimes we get questions like Can you do that? or Where do you stand? That's why we've gathered our experiences in the tips below. Do you go city camping? What are your experiences? Do you have more tips? Also, please tell us if you have ever citycamped abroad!
10 tips for city camping
- Prepare by having a full water tank, charged batteries, plenty of LPG, an empty toilet tank and an empty grey water tank.
- Choose a car park where you can park for a longer period (24 hours or more).
- Choose a parking space where the entire motorhome can fit, or where the overhang does not interfere or get in the way.
- Check the parking rules and pay (if applicable) the correct parking fee.
- Place the parking ticket in the windscreen in a visible position.
- Make sure the parking ticket is clearly visible even when you close the blackout curtains
- If the car park attendant comes by and delays the motorhome - go outside and ask if everything is ok
- Do not unpack your outdoor furniture or unfold your awning.
- Talk and socialise with people around - many people find it fun to 'camp' in the middle of the city and you can get valuable tips
- Don't forget to lock and alarm your motorhome when you leave it (including the tailgates).
Krister in Beijing says:
I have actually city-camped in my youth(!) when we borrowed a motorhome and went to Copenhagen. Without finding much in the city, we still found a nice parking space right behind the train station.
When we came back from an evening at Tivoli, a window was smashed and the caravan was looted.
When we went to the Danish police station to report the incident and tell them where we had parked, we were given an idiotic lecture about how if you park right there behind the train station, you will obviously be robbed.
Now we know.

The tricky thing when you're away from home (whether you're travelling with a campervan or not) is that you don't know the different areas and potential risks there. And in the worst case scenario, you don't realise until it's too late...
