Sure, Lake Garda is beautiful, but Lago d'Iseo is almost even more beautiful! We drove there in the evening to find a campsite (which there are plenty around the lake), but they were all full! A German laughed and explained that he booked already in February ... We had no choice but to hitchhike. The first night was in a car park, and the second night was incredibly beautiful right on the lake.

Lake Iseo in northern Italy
Lago d'Iseo, or Lake Iseo, is a lake in northern Italy between the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia. It is located west of Lake Garda and east of Lake Como.
The lake has an area of 62 square kilometres, a length of 25 kilometres and a maximum width of 4.7 kilometres. The Oglio River flows through the lake and is known for its beautiful surroundings. In its south-eastern corner is the town of Iseo.
Driving around Lago d'Iseo
We drove around the lake with the motorhome and were constantly fascinated by how beautiful it was. But would we be able to stay anywhere with the motorhome? All the campsites were fully booked, and there were plenty of signs telling us not to stay overnight with a motorhome.
Fricamping at Lago d'Iseo
We don't know the rules about free camping in Italy (anyone else?), but we saw several others doing the same thing. The first night we were in a car park behind two caravans. Then we found a fantastic spot right by the water, not far from the village of Marone. There was no sign saying that it was forbidden to stay with a motorhome, and no one drove us away. What could be so much better?
Continuing the journey
Last night we picked up Robin and Alexandra at Bergamo airport (so much easier to park than at Linate) and now we have made our way back to Milan's city campsite, from where we plan to discover Milan.

Leena says:
We fricamped a lot when we were in Italy, if there are no prohibitions and no one is disturbed in the place, yes it should feel safe too, then we stand there and no one has said anything about it. Often, many Italians stand and fricamp and if it is a weekend or high season, they stand in the smallest place as long as the motorhome can fit, we have seen.
Ohh, how I long to go back........

Matts Torebring says:
How nice that you have discovered the best side of the motorhome, stay where you want and just enjoy... We love this, but unfortunately, the southernmost countries we have been to this year, we have not dared. Unfortunately, many countries have banned overnight stays in camper vans. You don't want to be fined...
Ps. I have amazed myself this summer at all the restrictions, prohibitions, high gates & fences, high walls, codes & gates, check-in & check-out at a campsite when we just went out and walked.

Annelie, thank you! Wishing you also a nice summer!
Leena, yes, you might be right. We haven't really ventured into southern Europe before, but you have to find the right place. Here there were no prohibition signs, we didn't disturb anyone and the area felt nice and quiet. Absolutely fantastic!
Matts, free camping is the best thing about the motorhome! But we have not really dared in southern Europe before. Partly because we were unsure of the rules (as I said, you don't want to get fined) and you want to feel reasonably safe as well.
