Lovely Verona in Italy! The Teatro Romano was built in 30 AD and could accommodate 25,000 spectators during the Roman period in Italy. Today, the amphitheatre is the world's largest opera house in Verona, and the city has the second most Roman remains after Rome. See the Arena di Verona in Italy with pictures and text!
Verona - a city with a long history
Verona is an ancient city with a long history. According to archaeological findings, it may have been inhabited in prehistoric times, and was then taken over by the Etruscans before becoming a Roman city. Most of the preserved Roman remains, such as the amphitheatre, several bridges, walls and vaults, date back to the 100s BC. Only Rome surpasses Verona in the number of preserved Roman architectural remains!
We strolled around the city for a while, and you have to say that history is everywhere in the walls here. We also had a look in the shops, but most of what we found was too expensive, so nothing was allowed to leave the shops.
Incidentally, the city is also famous for being the setting for Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. Another interesting thing to mention is the city's flag, which looks almost exactly like the Swedish flag!
The amphitheatre in Verona
The Verona Amphitheatre, or Arena di Verona as it is called in Italian, dominates the city's skyline and is one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the world. The arena was built in 30 AD and is one of the oldest structures in the city. It is also one of Verona's most popular sights, attracting over 500,000 visitors to the city each year. Today, it hosts opera performances, with all 22,000 seats sold out months in advance.

Now I'm almost jealous............Verona! Have been there for the opera festival several times. Too bad you missed an incredible experience! You don't have to be an opera fan to enjoy the spectacle. I know that you have to buy tickets for the stalls far in advance, but the seats on the stairs can usually be bought at shorter notice, but the demand has probably increased.
We did NOT miss the amphitheatre in Pula...... but we did get a parking ticket 🙂 Enjoy your trip!

Tess, Verona is a romantic place to get engaged!
🙂
Inger and Ingemar, we really wanted to see an opera performance in Verona and looked for tickets before we left, but it was so terribly expensive that it felt like a bit of a drain on our travel budget. I can imagine it's amazing to see an opera performance there! Interesting (but sad) to hear that you got parking fines in Pula. It was really difficult to park there!

Anna, glad you're checking in here and sounds great with all the travelling in Italy! No, we never actually stood in Verona. We were there for the day, and then we managed to park quite centrally, near the amphitheatre. In the evening we stayed at some campsite on the south side of Lake Garda. Hope you have a great trip to Italy this summer!
