The cold and darkness has just arrived and (from bitter experience) you know that it will stay for a while. More and more conversations on the internet are starting to appear in the form of "I want to go away for a week in January. Where should I go to get sun and warmth without having to travel so far?". Well, that's such a semi-impossible equation (given that we live bizarrely far north). Here are some suggestions from us. What are your best tips?
1. Europe
Warmth is not everything! Just getting away and getting some new impressions can be nice. Pack your winter jacket and visit a city in Europe. BudapestBerlin, Amsterdam, Krakow or Kiev?
2. North Africa
After all, the quickest way to warmth is through North Africa. The Canary Islands are a classic, and other options include Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco. We preferred Morocco than Egyptbut in Marrakech in December, on the other hand, it wasn't very warm ...
3. Middle East
The Middle East is also not too far away and there are many interesting destinations (which we have never visited). How about Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan or Oman?

If you wanted to travel somewhere completely different, drive a car as if you were in Jurasic Park, the film you know. I would fly to the Dominican Republic and rent a car there. It's a good idea to have a good sense of humour and good insurance. But for those who want something very special, this large island in the Caribbean is incredibly fantastic!!! Superlatives hail. I've been going there for nine years now, yes you read that right. Every year I find something new. Travelling around in my own rental car, or taking the bus. Dominican has the best road network in the area. So even though they drive like crazy, it's easy to get around the whole island.
Sunbathe on deserted beaches, climb steep mountain walls by car or on foot. Pico Duarte is over 3300 metres above sea level, and some incredibly beautiful areas are located on high plateaus, with scenery you wouldn't have thought existed in the Caribbean.
Maybe you shouldn't sleep in the car, cheap or luxury hotels (take your pick) are preferable. Overnight stays can be found for 15 USD, but for 100 USD you will sleep like a princess (prince if you prefer).
I leave on 15 Dec and come back a month later. I can't wait.
Flights cost from 6500-10000 SEK from Stockholm. Best period is Nov-April. Temp, at coldest 26 degrees, at warmest 31, all year round. Perfect in other words 😉

Yes, go to the Middle East. Not terribly far, but crazy hot. THAT sounds excellent to me. Dubai, abu dhabi etc...
Would love to go there myself too!

You don't want to spend too much time in the cabin, so... Dubai,,and then over to Oman.. on the same trip! Jordan many say is definitely worth a visit. I myself have not been to these countries but hope to one day.
I am sure you will find your journey!
Hugs

yes there are many interesting destinations! Morocco is one place I would love to go.
But Spain is something I have a bit of a penchant for.
In February last year when we were in southern Spain, we had about 22 degrees. Quite ok as it was -25 at home!

CaribbeanAlex, thanks for the tips! It really sounds like you have found your favourite destination! But as I said, it's always nice to have new interesting travel tips!
Ninni, Morocco is actually a bit charming. However, I think we stayed a little too long in Marrakech. We got quite tired of the food and drinking water all the time. ....
😉
But the quad bike ride was awesome!

Isn't the Middle East and North Africa a bit too unsettled now?
I've started to think about the English Channel island of Jersey...although I'm thinking of it as an autumn trip next September. What do you reckon? Has anyone been there?

There are many places. I wonder what it is like in Sicily or Cyprus. Might be nice days, but paid for with chilly evenings and nights.
Enjoy! 🙂

Britt, maybe so, but probably depends on which country and destination you choose. Do not know much about Jersey unfortunately, but it sounds interesting!
Sure, southern Europe can be nice and cosy in winter. Hardly bathing weather, but if that's not what you're looking for, it can work just fine!
