Sometimes you're just travelling for sun, sea and relaxation. Sometimes you want a little more. Or it just happens to be a bit more, because you meet exciting people or visit interesting places. Which destination has changed your life the most?
Lonely Planet's description of travelling
Lonely Planet describes travelling in an interesting way:
Change is at the heart of travel. While it might not be the reason we head out the door and cross oceans, it is an almost inevitable by-product. How can you interact with other people and cultures, be pushed out of your comfort zone, have your perceptions challenged and not alter a little inside? Obviously, travel is not always about rewriting your personality - but even the most humble of trips can change us in ways big and small.
Lonely Planet
Journeys that change
They have asked their followers on Facebook and Twitter which travel destination has changed them the most. The answers are described in a word cloud, with India topping the list, followed by Cambodia, Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, New Zealand and Nepal. I don't find the answers from Lonely Planet readers the most interesting, but the question itself. What would you answer? Which destination has changed your life the most?
Our most dramatic journey
Several travel destinations have influenced and touched us, but nothing compares with Kenya and Tanzania. We got there at a turbulent time and were confronted with very different things than we expected. Read the story of our most dramatic journey.
The Statue of Liberty says:
Difficult to answer, but I would probably say Egypt. Partly because even as a little boy I wanted to travel there "when I grew up". Partly because my children gave me a trip there as a Christmas present last year because "you have always been there for us and believed in us" 🙂 🙂.
Good morning 🙂

The small island in the Maldives in 1989 because it was the most peaceful thing I have ever experienced!

Unfortunately, I have not travelled very far, so nothing has changed me in that sense.
Who knows if I would have DARED to go to Kenya/Tanzania...?
Possibly South Africa in the "tourist" parts. Ha ha! 😉

Katta in Asia, I can really understand that! When you also live in a country, you get to experience it in a completely different way than you do when you're just a tourist.
Stattinskan, how nice to be able to travel to a place that you have dreamed of for so long, and to also get the trip that way!
Helga, didn't realise you lived in Singapore when you were little! Understand that it must have affected you living there for so long!
Snobben & Co, sounds great!
Västgötskan, you can be affected a bit by meetings with people and experiences even if you only go to the neighbouring village...? Not all travelling affects you fundamentally, but a long trip doesn't necessarily do that either....

I would have to say Morocco, because it was the first time I came to a place outside of tourist streets and because we were in the country for so long.

Krister in Beijing says:
I think it is easy for people who answer this question to unconsciously answer the question "What has been the most wonderful journey in your life?", which is not the same thing.
I have a trip to the US that was probably my "most wonderful", but it is definitely the time in China that has changed my life the most.

Agneta, getting off the tourist track and staying a little longer in a place are just the kind of things that can help you see a little more and also be affected a little more... I agree.
Krister, I also think there can be such confusion, at least sometimes. To really be affected and changed by another country must be most relevant when you live there for a long time....

Across the board says:
For me it's probably not a place, but what has affected me most is our first summer with the motorhome. Travelling, short or long, across the country or here and there, is a great way to recover from the stress of everyday life. Without the motorhome, I would not be the person I am today.
And if I had to mention a destination, it would be Tendaba Camp in Gambia. Oh my gosh! .....

Across the board, can agree that travelling itself, being on the move (wheels) is an experience in itself. Gambia sounds exciting!

Our first trip to India Christmas/New Year 2002/2003, we travelled there with
our then 13 and 16 year old daughters.
An absolutely wonderful trip, we were so enamoured that my husband and I returned in 2005.
Hopefully, there will be more trips there before we get too old.

The Maldives, for sure! Far away from everything else and I worked there for two years as a diving instructor.

Birgitta Johansson, glad to hear that you had such a positive experience in India! We have not been there...
Carola, the Maldives must be a beautiful place! If you live in a place for a long time, you are always affected in one way or another.

Camilla, interesting that you write like that! That's how I feel, when it comes to some trips, that they have changed me forever in some way, bigger or smaller. Brazil sounds exciting by the way! We have never been to South America.
