The world of camping is full of words and concepts that can be difficult for beginners. Which words do you really need to know? Here are a few words that you might want to know, so you don't feel completely confused when you're new to the world of camping and motorhomes...
Glossary for campers
- Semi-integrated: Motorhome built on a lorry chassis, where the original cabin is retained. In some cases, however, it is modified, for example with insulation and specialised cab seats.
- Fricamping: Setting up in the open air, but without violating rules and regulations. Can be in a clearing in the forest, by a lake or any other place that appeals at the moment.
- Entry-level model: Caravans and motorhomes aimed at first-time buyers, usually with more basic equipment and lower prices.
- Control panelThere are controls for many, sometimes all, of the carriage's functions in one place. May look different in different makes.
- Quick Stop: Offered by some campsites, and located directly adjacent to them. You can arrive no earlier than 21.00 and leave no later than 09.00.
- Service weight: Motor homes: weight of the vehicle without load but with driver (75 kg) and filled fuel tank, LPG filled to 90 per cent and electric cable (5 kg).
- Overhang: The distance between the centre of the rear axle and the ball centre of the drawbar. Too much overhang can cause instability, short overhang gives more stable road behaviour.

Everything has its own language. Unfortunately, I don't know the camping language very well! 🙁

Mr Jens Fylkner says:
Hi, thanks for the good example, it is indeed true that there are plenty of "industry terms" (or hobby terms, perhaps you should call them). When I started working with camping almost ten years ago, I reacted to a lot of terms, but as soon as you learn them, you don't reflect on them anymore. Then someone new comes in (for example, I was asked why we called a toilet on a campsite "unisex" - i.e. for both men and women) and then you are reminded of the funny lingo you are using.
Anyway, thanks for a great blog, perfect for us who are about to start a new business in the motorhome world (and there are probably a few concepts that can be good to pick up for those who know camping but have not previously dealt with motorhomes). Regards, Jens at Grand Tourismo
