DN's 10 tips for cheaper travel

  1. Travelling in early summer - In most European countries, the holiday season is in August and the high season is from mid-July to early September. If you go in June, it may still be low or mid-season in many places, and therefore cheaper. Charters are also cheaper in early summer.
  2. Book early - The most affordable trips are the first to go, so to get an affordable trip it's often a case of being early and simply booking early.
  3. Organising the trip yourself - It goes without saying that the company that wants to help organise a trip also wants to be paid for its services. Organising the trip yourself can be cheaper, although it does take more time. Take the time and effort to compare prices for flights and hotels to find the best option.
  4. Change of residence - An alternative to staying in a hotel is to change residence. For example, try exchanging homes through the websites intervac.se or hembyte.nu.
  5. Be flexible - If you're prepared to be flexible, you're more likely to find good prices. Think flexibly in terms of area, departure time and airline to find the most affordable options.
  6. Choose different companies out and about - Travelling with the same airline to and from home may not be the cheapest option. Sometimes it can be cheaper to travel with two different companies.
  7. Putting up with stopovers - If you want to travel cheaply, you may have to put up with not having the most comfortable journey. There are often low-cost flights that involve multiple or long stopovers. Since many people want to travel more comfortably, these are sold at a better price.
  8. Take advantage of promotional prices - Keep an eye out for temporary promotions. For example, promotions can be found on your ICA card, your Med Mera card and on various travel websites.
  9. Rent an apartment instead of a hotel - There are more ways to stay on holiday than in a hotel. You can rent a house, apartment or cottage. As well as reducing your bill, you can sometimes cook your own food instead of eating all your meals in a restaurant.
  10. Don't go so far - You don't always have to travel so far! Choose destinations that are close by, such as Denmark, Germany or Poland.
