The cosy port city of Halifax in Canada has a lot to offer. A delightful 72-hour weekend getaway could be the solution for those who want to get away from the stress of everyday life and instead enjoy good food and drink, cosy sights and a city far enough away from home.

By following the following tips from travel site Skyscanner make the most of your trip and your 72 hours in Halifax. Attentive readers will know that we (Helena & Peter) are going there in July this year!

Skyscanner's travel guide to Halifax

Halifax is the largest city in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. The municipality has just over 370,000 inhabitants and the city centre just over 280,000. Halifax was one of the cities that hosted the 2008 World Men's Ice Hockey Championships and the city also has a well-known Titanic Museum, but is best known for the Halifax Explosion of 1917 when two ships collided, killing more than 2000 people and destroying much of the city.

Halifax, Canada Day 1

When visiting Halifax, you must have breakfast at Cora's Breakfast & Lunch, which has two locations in Halifax. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and a six-page menu. After breakfast, you can spend the day exploring the exciting history of the city.

The first stop should be at the Old Town Clock, which is one of Halifax's most famous landmarks. Next, you can take the opportunity to look at Halifax's oldest building, St Paul's Church from 1750. If you like beautiful buildings, you should also not miss Government House and Province House.

One museum you shouldn't miss is the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site which contains a living history museum. Another place to visit is the SS Atlantic Heritage Park, a memorial to all those on the SS Atlantic which sank on 1 April 1873. Other museums and historical sites that you can take a closer look at are the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia, the Discovery Centre, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the Museum of National History and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Enjoy a great dinner at CUT Steakhouse + Urban Grill. This is where all the trendy Halifax locals gather to enjoy the finest meat dishes. Then move on to Durty Nelly's, Eastern Canada's most authentic Irish pub designed and built in Ireland and then shipped across the Atlantic to be rebuilt in Halifax.

Halifax, Canada Day 2

This day I suggest you visit Smitty's for breakfast, a popular family restaurant overlooking Bayers Lake. At Fisherman's Cove, you can then watch the fishermen come in with their daily catch, or take a boat ride to discover McNab's Island.

You can also take a trip on the Tall Ship Silva, a three-masted sailing boat that runs daily tours. There you can soak up the sun and the stunning views from the deck or enjoy a drink in the cosy pub. Seafood is of course on the menu for those who want an early dinner. As a tourist in Halifax, you can also try many different sports, such as golf, kayaking, winter surfing, regular surfing and rafting.

Don't forget that Halifax offers several beaches for those who want to soak up the sun, such as Bayswater, Conrad's Beach, Crystal Crescent Beach, Dollar Lake, Martinique Beach and Queensland Beach.

This evening is best started with a visit to one of the city's excellent seafood restaurants, such as the Waterfront Warehouse, the only restaurant in Halifax to offer prawns, crabs and oysters under one roof. Finish your evening at the Grafton Street Dinner Theatre, which has a unique concept of artists as waiters. Don't miss out on trying Nova Scotia's famous wines, which are very good even if they haven't quite found their way to the export market yet.

Halifax, Canada Day 3

On your last day in Halifax, get a hearty breakfast at The Coastal Café. It offers both traditional breakfast dishes and more imaginative flavour combinations like the Elvis - a peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich. How about spending the day shopping? Check out Mic Mac Mall, Clearwater Lobster & Seafood Shops, Del Sol, NovaScotian Crystal, Sweet Jane's, Hydrostone Market, Halifax Shopping Centre, Park Lane, Scotia Square and Sunnyside Mall.

In my opinion, the best way to end a weekend getaway is at a spa. The Aqua Spa is well known, located on Nova Scotia's romantic South Shore, where you can breathe in the healthy salty air that surrounds the spa while enjoying peace and quiet. Embrace Spa, Interlude Spa and Spirit Spa are other spas in Halifax that offer calm, cosy atmosphere and relaxing treatments.

Then continue the evening in the spirit of tranquillity. Peggy's Cove is one of Nova Scotia's most famous and most photographed sites. The beauty is striking and the place is perfect for romantic walks and why not a cosy picnic. Another beautiful place in Halifax is the Public Gardens where you can stroll among fountains, historic statues, rare flowers and trees and enjoy free concerts.
