We must say that all the people we have met in Canada are incredibly nice, and the service in the restaurants is fantastic. So we thought we'd take the opportunity to write about service and prices in Canada!
Good service
We have experienced the service here in Halifax in Canada as very good. You never have to wait and in the restaurant there is always someone asking how it tastes and if you are missing anything. Also, most people are open, friendly and cheerful. Nothing to complain about! However, when it comes to prices, it's good to know how things work in this country.
VAT, tips and prices in Canada
Menu prices are as in Sweden or slightly lower, but then VAT and tips are added. This is easy to miss when you are used to how things work in Sweden and Europe, and then it is easy for the final price to suddenly become much more expensive than you thought. This also applies to both restaurants and shops. There is a price that you can see, and then you have to figure out that VAT and tips are added.
If you pay by card, there is a ready-made option with a 15 per cent tip that you can choose. As above, this has felt a little strange, like you are "pressured" to tip, but if you get used to the system, it probably feels natural. A few times, this has made us a little surprised by the price, but on the plus side, we must again mention the fine service and the good treatment!
By the way, the clothing style is a bit different here! During the day, everyone (regardless of age and gender) wears shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops. In the evening, the guys wear the same clothes (even in restaurants and nightclubs) and the girls change into ill-fitting floral dresses á la housewives of the 50s. For that, they keep their flip-flops or put on a pair of 80s pumps. A bit unexpected, perhaps, but I still managed to find some shopping bargains.
pictures from Halifax, Canada
Here are also some pictures from this coastal city. The central part of the city consists of steep streets and a variety of different houses, ranging from very modern to creatively colourful. Down by the harbour, skyscrapers mix with charming harbourside restaurants and boats of all sizes and models. This is a city that is easy to fall in love with!
