Every now and then you hear that you are not allowed to camp here or there, and then of course the question of definition arises: What is camping? As far as I know, you can fall asleep for a while in your parked car. So what determines when it is camping? The number of hours you sleep? Whether you sleep sitting or lying down? If you unfold the footboard?
Hard to draw the line
I Hallandsekot you can read that Halmstad prohibits camping in certain places. Parking manager Ulf Broberg notes that it is "difficult to draw the line between parking and camping".
Traffic planner Annica Pålsson in Laholm hopes that there will be legal cases when motorhome owners are reported for unauthorised camping ... Can't someone tell us what the rules are instead? And set up parking spaces, if it bothers anyone to sleep in their car ... or?
Seniors Speculate says:
As far as we have learnt, you can park wherever it is allowed, which means that you must stand in marked areas. You may not put out any furniture etc. which is then considered to be camping. Then you must check the local traffic regulations if any special regulations have been made, such as that overnight stays in vehicles are prohibited. So if you park, you are not camping. But it's widely discussed on all motorhome forums. 3 M

Krister in Beijing says:
My opinion (without being familiar with the rules) is that as long as you stay within a parking space with your vehicle, and do not remove items (such as chairs etc), it should count as parking.

A clarification would be welcome. You stop the car while you are in it and park it when you leave it, said my driving school teacher in 1965 when I got my licence. Have these rules changed?

Here in our little duck pond, it takes a little longer than in the rest of Europe to understand the importance of motorhome tourism. We also have the Swedish jealousy to take into account. Nor should anyone think that they are something just because they come in a slightly larger car. Here, everyone should be reasonable and not stand out.

This is a common question here in Australia too, because all backpackers just "park" their car/campervan and sleep in it. But then the tourism industry goes crazy because they are losing money and instead raise the prices of the campsites to earn more. Sigh!

Seniors Speculate, we tend to reason just like you. We follow the parking rules.
Krister in Beijing, that's exactly how we think too. Many parking attendants seem to think the same way, and mostly check if you stick out the window.
Matts, no, not to my knowledge... And if it is suddenly forbidden to fall asleep in your car, I guess it will also be forbidden in cars and lorries... or?
Lars, I think you are so right! A lot is about jealousy. Of course you should follow parking rules and be careful about nature etc., but if people still get annoyed, it's about something else!
Emmy, such a discussion can certainly take place here too. We can stay at campsites when we want nature, swimming, etc. But if you want to go to a restaurant in the middle of a city, it is difficult to stand on a campsite 3 km away... A central site can work perfectly well, but it is not always available.
Frankie & Co, yes or not...!!!? You kind of freak out when you hear that...

In Denmark, there are now heated discussions about where motorhomes can be parked, as there is no right of public access. Some municipalities have taken the issue to court and some towns have even banned motorhomes from being parked overnight. You are not allowed to arrive at the pitches (most of which are in camping areas) before 20.00. How crazy is that?

Jealousy... that's probably true. Maybe that's where the shoe really fits.

Deciree, yes, one begins to wonder if it is not so?

I think you should be allowed to sleep in your car, whether it's a motorhome or a regular car. As long as you don't take out chairs and other things like Seniors Speculate said... Imagine a scenario where you get tired and it's a distance to the nearest campsite. Stop and sleep. Now that's what I call freedom!
