Making your own sushi - nigiri, maki and california rolls

Last night we finally tried making our own sushi. It was really fun! The rice took the longest to make. It had to be rinsed, boiled, mixed with sushi-su (a mixture of rice vinegar, rice wine and sugar) and then cooled. Anyway, we were happy with the result, and it was really, really good!

Nigiri sushi

The nigiri pieces, i.e. the pieces consisting of rice topped with fish or something else, were quite easy to make. Possibly it was a bit tricky to make the avocado pieces ...

Maki sushi

The makibits, or rollers, may require a little more practice. It is not exactly difficult to make them, but to get them looking good requires some practice. But in the end they turned out ok, or what do you think?

California rolls

Now that we're on a roll (and have the ingredients at home), we might as well go ahead and try "California rolls", i.e. rolls where the rice is at the end. Peter carefully studied instructional videos on YouTube before we started making them. Didn't they turn out well? They were good too!

Sushi with Icelandic scrambled eggs

We've also been watching great films on YouTube, where sushi chefs roll all sorts of unexpected things into the maki rolls: fried prawns, crab, roe, different vegetables and batters. So, we experimented and rolled in some iceberg batter, along with crabfish and cucumber. It was good, but a bit unexpected in flavour. Like a mix of sushi and sandwich cake almost... These were good, but to be honest, I like the more traditional ones more!
