Malaysian food, today it's time to share our experiences! When travelling, it is exciting to try the local cuisine. Malaysia is a multicultural society with food influences from many parts of the world, and as a tourist it was sometimes easiest to find Chinese, Thai or Indian food. But of course, we also found Malaysian dishes.
Common ingredients in Malaysian food
So, what are typical ingredients in Malaysian food? What was common in the Malaysian dishes we ordered was that they 1) included rice or noodles, 2) often contained coconut milk, and 3) were often quite spicy. At one point, the waiters asked us if we wanted spicy food, and Peter nodded happily. He would perhaps not have done. Spicy food in Malaysia can be quite different from what you find in Sweden. But there is a lot of good and tasty food in Malaysia!
Malaysian market dishes
So, which Malaysian dishes do you usually come across? Here are some Malaysian dishes that we often saw in restaurants in Langkawi:
- Satay - chicken skewers with peanut sauce, cucumber, red onion and rice cubes
- Rendang - hearty beef stew with coconut milk
- Nasi Lemak - rice dish with coconut milk
- Laksa - noodle soup with coconut milk
In addition to these typically Malaysian dishes, you can expect Asian food in general, such as Chinese, Japanese and Indian food. In many places you can also order European food, such as Italian, although the order of the dishes or the way they are served is not always what you are used to.

It's almost one of the most fun things about travelling... getting to try the food of other countries 🙂.
That dessert looks really good!
Have a nice weekend!

We rarely eat Swedish food on our travels. There are so many yellow grains out there and you don't want to miss them! 🙂

Curious about the Malaysian food and wondering if it differs so much from the food here in Bangkok. I think there is quite a lot of inspiration from there.

Anki, agree! We love to try food when we are abroad!
Lennart, there are a lot of exciting restaurants in Sweden too! We have visited an African and a Russian restaurant in Stockholm. It will be like a little "trip" too!
🙂
Guys, we also think we got good food, almost everywhere!
Of course, eating the local food is the most fun! We ate mostly Malaysian and some Chinese, but varied a few times with something more European.
Fantasy Dining, I don't know how much it differs? The dishes that I perceived as most typical are the ones I wrote above. Don't know how similar/different it is?
