Today we have made an excursion to the north-eastern part of Langkawi, and made a mangrove boat trip through the mangrove swamp. It was an interesting trip, where we got to see all sorts of wildlife - some of which we've never heard of before - and learn more about nature.
Mangrove boat trip
We booked the tour here at Langkawi a few days in advance, and when the time came we had to jump into small buses that took us to the place where the boat trips start. We got a cheerful young female guide, who happily told us about all the animals, while we quietly glided along the water. Around us the jungle was dense ...
Many wild animals
The guide told us about all the animals, but sometimes it is a bit difficult to understand what they are, when you are not sure about the English names of different birds, fish and reptiles. Especially we saw many crabs, snakes and different birds.
A funny fellow was a "walking fish" that ran around in the mud everywhere, but was a bit difficult to get a picture of. We saw many eagles, and other birds such as collared kingfisher, little egret and little heron. One of the snakes we saw was apparently a "viper" and very poisonous ...
Floating restaurant and ancient animals
The tour ended with lunch at a floating restaurant, accessible only from the water, which was also a fish farm. That's where we got to hold the fillet in the picture below. This is a "horse shoe crab" (dagger tail in Swedish), and thus a truly ancient animal! It is related to scorpions, and the oldest fossils of these are 450 million years old. Truly fascinating!

Exciting! Fun with all the animals! I want to remember that I did a similar tour and that I thought the monkeys were too forward. Keep up the good work! And I am happy to come back to Langkawi through you.

Rolle and Carina, yes there are certainly lots of animals that you have never seen or even heard of. Good continuation!
Ditte, yes, we've heard that monkeys can be like that and were told to hold on to our things. But at least we didn't lose anything...
😉
Ulla & Torgny, yes many animals were completely new to us, like the walking fish for example...

Imagine how many unknown animals there are that you never get to see. Now you can see some that you may never have seen.
Stay in the boat!

Mary of Rövarhamn says:
Horse shoe crab, we have learnt, is called Dolksvans in Swedish, and it is a rather appropriate name, even if your particular specimen seems to have lost its tail. Kingfisher is called Kingfisher, Egret is probably a heron. And Viper is as far as I know a kind of viper. Love, Linda

Sounds exciting and interesting, but I'd love to get away from those snakes. My animal-crazy son would have loved to go on that boat trip.

Mary of Rövarhamn, oh thank you! Oh, dagger tail!? Yes ours had a tail, it sticks out between Peter's fingers.
Dila, I'm not fond of snakes either, but other than that, animals are fun!
