Do you choose sunshine holidays or skiing trips during the winter months? Or maybe both? And where do you go when you want to ski? "We usually prioritise sunshine or visits to big cities, but at Christmas 2008 we took a skiing week in Sälen. We had fantastic luck with the weather and it was really nice on the slopes!
Growing up with skiing
For me (Helena) it was perhaps extra fun to go skiing again because I grew up with skiing holidays every year. We usually went to the Swedish mountains when I was little, but once we went to Trysil in Norway and another time to Harz in Germany.
Going to Germany was particularly exciting - I was 10 years old and it was my first time outside Scandinavia. The wall against East Germany was there at the time and from our hotel you could see the armed soldiers guarding the border ...
Easy travelling in Eastern Europe
Nowadays it is much easier to travel in the eastern parts of Europe! In recent years we have been keen to try the ski resorts of Eastern Europe. We like Eastern Europe in general. There is that feeling of travelling into something partly unexplored. At the same time there is beautiful nature, interesting history - and you always get a lot for your money.
Interesting ski destinations
Genome www.snowtrex.se you can book ski holidays to a variety of countries, including the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Bulgaria. The images below are from the High Tatras in Slovakia. This is 'Europe's smallest higher mountain range'. It has the feel of the Alps, but is much less crowded and more affordable than the classic destinations. Sounds like an interesting skiing destination!

We probably prefer to choose winter with lovely spring sun :-) you get such a nice tan from it. Hugs

Skiing holidays are great! We belong to the group that has gone every year (but not the last four), and the last trip went to Bulgaria, Borovetz, a ski resort just a couple of hours away from Sofia - great!

We "have" to go to our cabin in Stöten, Sälenfjällen from time to time so it will be there, for our part 🙂.

Deciree, spring sunshine is lovely! We're hoping for some of that in Barcelona!
🙂
Marina, glad to hear that you liked Bulgaria as a ski resort! How was the price situation there?
Holy cow, cosy with your own cabin in Sälen... I understand that you "have" to go there sometimes!

Since I have been an active pensioner for a few years now, I/we can travel whenever we want and don't have to count holiday days.
We like both sun and city holidays, and during the years in Beijing we only went skiing during the day in an area just outside Beijing, on artificial snow.
But I like the Italian Alps for both the skiing and the good food. Staying right by the lift in a cosy hotel with half board, delicious Italian food, adds that little extra. We have been to a place called Gressoney several times and there are miles of slopes and fine loose snow skiing.
Otherwise, we like France, but it's not so authentic...but great skiing.
Austria is good, but usually you have to take a cable car to get up the slopes and I think it takes too much time and the queues are long.
Bulgaria, where I travelled 35 years ago, I remember as an exciting experience and would probably go there again.
Because travelling is a way of life....
Now on the way to Vemdalen by train with a change in Mora.

We have a ski and boat gang that we go skiing and boating with (surprisingly! 😉 ).
This year it will be Sölden - we booked before midsummer, so we have been waiting a long time now...
We've thought about skiing in the Czech Republic, but it didn't happen, and we were also keen to try the ski slopes in Iran when we were there in 1995.
