Ving has conducted a survey that shows that it is popular to update social media while on holiday. More than 6 out of 10 Ving travellers make daily updates.
These images are posted
They prefer to post pictures of excursions (67%), swimming (41%) and food (38%). If you share travel plans before you leave, you do so to inspire others to travel (52%), to tell them that you may be difficult to reach (15%) or to brag about your trip (14%).
"That's how we brag about our holidays"
GP refers to Vings' survey and writes "How we brag about our holidays". And it makes me wonder: when is it bragging to post pictures from a trip? Travelling abroad is something that has a relatively high status in our society, so in that sense I can buy that it can be used as bragging. At the same time, if you use social media, you want to communicate about what's going on in your life, right? Especially about things that feel fun and exciting?
And what is the difference between talking about your holiday on Facebook and talking about it in the coffee room at work? Personally, I think it is fun and exciting to hear about other people's travels and I am rarely provoked by the fact that it would be boastful, but it may well depend on how it is presented ...? What do you say? Do you think it can be bragging to upload holiday photos on social media, and if so, what makes it bragging?
Ditte says:
No, I don't think that either holidays or posting holiday pictures is bragging. I've never even thought about it.
Travelling is an investment and you often give up a lot of material things to travel.
Instead, think of it this way: all the fashion blogs, interior design blogs, beauty blogs, etc., etc. - what are all these? Bragging rights?
Who is the best looking, who has the nicest home, the most expensive, finest, trendiest "outfits" for themselves and their children....? I get tired just thinking about it.
For me, experiences, community, learning and expanded horizons through travel can never be bragging. (Then there are those who always live in 5* hotels, all inclusive, in one and the same place. But for me that's not travelling... It's more like staying in a place for the sake of it...)

I agree with Ditte! I post holiday pictures so that those at home will know what we are doing and that everything is "OK". I also think it's super fun to read about other people's trips and maybe get tips and ideas for the next time you go away yourself!

Ditte, great comment about fashion blogs and interior design blogs. What is the difference? And can't you talk about something without it being bragging? Maybe it's simply about our Swedish jante-lag....
😉
Synne, yes, it's a good way to know how it is with loved ones, now that many people are travelling a lot. And I myself love getting travel tips and inspiration from others!

Bragging - I think it's in the eye of the beholder. If I get jealous and envious, I may WANT to interpret it as bragging - just because I may not have the same opportunities myself.
Maybe that's why I never find any boastful blogs.... Have a lovely Saturday

We agree with Kors & Tvärs that it's in the eye of the beholder. They are probably just jealous of anything that people think is bragging. But isn't that what FB is all about, showing off in some way to your "friends". We think it's great fun to follow the journeys that take place on the blogs and for us you are more than happy to tell us about your travels. We like it very much! 3 M

You want to share the beautiful things you see and experience, if someone gets jealous, they can simply save up for their own trip 🙂.

Seniors Speculate, glad you like reading about travelling! When it comes to FB, I think it might be about different things for different people? Some seem to have a great need to post just about everything, from breakfast to dinner, and then you can wonder what it is about? But FB can also be a good way to keep in touch, send greetings and messages to each other etc, I think.

Gosh, we're bragging on a daily basis then 😉.

No, it's not bragging to talk about your travelling in text and pictures. As someone who never travels, I think it's great fun to follow others' journeys near and far, a real luxury. I absolutely do not perceive it as bragging.

Ha, ha! Would it be bragging to share your holiday photos?! That's the stupidest thing I've heard and I definitely don't agree. I think it's interesting to follow other travellers and see what they do and share. It is inspiration. Can only agree with Camilla "if someone gets jealous, they can save up for their own trip quite simply". 🙂

Annika, yes haha, we too...
😉
Inga Magnusson, good to hear that there are more people who think like that!
Christine, yes, and many times it's up to the viewer to choose whether to be inspired or envious... but it's a phenomenon that not only applies to travelling, but to everything in life!

I just wonder why people don't just have a holiday and relax and enjoy but have to take lots of photos all the time - which are then posted on FB -every day of the holiday!
