Linda, Ludvig and their children, from the blog Mary af Rövarhamn, are making a fantastic long journey around the world in their sailboat, and reflect on the fact that people often point out that they should be grateful for being able to undertake such a journey. As if it just fell into their lap, like an unexpected gift. They have written an interesting blog post, which we think you should read.
Purposeful preparation
Please read this post on the blog Mary af Rövarhamn. They write that people are not envious, but jealous, because they themselves may have had dreams that never materialised. But, as they write, their journey has nothing to do with luck, but is the result of a decade of purposeful preparation.
We can influence
And I have to comment, because I think they are so right! Life is certainly not fair in any way, and we all have different opportunities. But opportunities are not only something that exists independently of us, but also very much something we create for ourselves. Sartre argued that human beings are 'condemned to freedom', which offers opportunities but also creates anxiety. As humans, we can make different choices, and if we want to, we can influence the direction of events.
Must work towards the goal
Sometimes we may think that people have a little too much of a tendency to sit back and wait for life to surprise them - and then be disappointed when it doesn't. However, this is not always the case. If you want to get somewhere, you usually have to work for it.
The goal doesn't always have to be a spectacular round-the-world trip. It could be a new job, breaking up with a bad relationship or creating a new lifestyle. After all, as far as we know, you only live once... So, what do you say, are you doing what you want to do with your life? Or do you have a dream that it's time to try to realise?
Johanna in Skåne says:
I recognise what you write about. Opportunities do not fall upon you, they arise in an interaction between people, for example. Not everyone can do everything, but it is important to try to be honest with yourself - what do I want? Sometimes everything happens so quickly that I feel I don't really have time to reflect on whether it's what I want to do that I'm actually doing. I like to plan, but want to be able to improvise. The room for manoeuvre varies throughout life, you are not always only responsible for yourself, but it is really important to seize the day!

Johanna, I agree that sometimes things happen fast and it's hard to stop and think. But I think it's important to try sometimes! I also agree that you want to be able to both plan and improvise. From time to time, different opportunities (big and small) appear that you can take a stand on. If exactly everything is planned in advance, it becomes difficult to be open to such opportunities ... And of course it is the case that you are responsible for more than yourself, not least when you have children. What you want to do in life and how you want it to look is something you have to think about in relation not only to yourself, but also to others around you.

So well formulated! The text represents many of the thoughts of both Bosse and me. Some things may have to be breaded and properly breaded, but there must also be room for flexibility. And furthermore, you have great opportunities to decide the life you want to live. Sometimes you have to give up some material things in order to be able to have and receive experiences of various kinds.

Ditte, yes, sometimes you have to ask yourself what you think is most important, material things or other things. Today it feels like we're overwhelmed by material things, like we almost have to defend ourselves sometimes....
😉
Mariam, glad you like our site!

Seniors Speculate says:
That was a very good post. Life is actually what we make it. Does not always have to do with resources and opportunities, but above all to fully do what you want. If you don't dare anything, you can't win anything either. Of course it can go wrong. But it's better to try and take a chance than to sit around when you get really old and regret everything you haven't done. You should realise your dreams and work on them. Aren't you about to realise a dream yourself? Then you sometimes have to give up a lot. We don't regret anything, on the contrary. Goodbye! 3 M

Seniors Speculate, well, it's better to try and fail than never to try... At least you won't have to sit around in old age regretting that you didn't dare to try. Yes, we are preparing for a long journey! And sometimes we are told that "what if it goes this way, and what if it goes that way". Well, we don't know... But we'd rather try than not dare! Otherwise we would regret it.

No, I'd like something more in life than just ploughing on and on. Strangely enough, it's so difficult and you just can't manage to change your life...
I could imagine travelling more and not having such fixed commitments as now. Work a little and travel a little - that would be perfect!

Krister in Beijing says:
I haven't read the post you link to, but I can fully agree with the text above.
It is surprising how many people believe that special adventures, "dreams", are reserved for a few and impossible for most people - including themselves.
I like to think that most people can realise far more dreams than most people do, if they have the courage to change their priorities and try.

Helga, it's easy to get stuck in old habits! But the question is whether you might not be able to do more than you think, if you really want to?
🙂
Krister, interesting description that you think some experiences are reserved for a few. But I think it can be true! What image you have of yourself and what is possible, I think to a large extent affects what you dare to try!
