Despite all the hype about long-haul destinations, Spain is the king of destinations for Swedish travellers. This is shown when the travel magazine Vagabond presents the Travel Barometer 2013.
Travel Barometer 2013
In 2012, Swedes made 1.9 million trips to Spain - a 70 per cent increase from the previous year. Cyprus, Egypt and the USA are the destinations that are increasing the most, while Thailand is declining significantly. Could it be that Swedes are beginning to experience a certain 'saturation' when it comes to Thailand?
Top 20 - Where are Swedes travelling?
Here is the top list. Spain tops the list, followed by several Nordic countries and other countries in our immediate neighbourhood, such as Germany. Outside of Europe, the United States takes the top spot, and the most popular country in Asia, although declining in popularity, is still Thailand.

Seniors Speculate, 3 M says:
Could be the same with the saturation. I have never understood the Swedes' fondness for Thailand. For us, there are so many much better destinations. USA for example, but you already knew that. There you can find everything you want and experience most things. And you get a lot for your money. Can't handle the humidity and heat in Asia. This is probably the case with many Swedes because we are not used to it. 3 M

3M, no we haven't really understood either... Not that there is anything wrong with Thailand, but there are so many countries in the world to choose from! Yes, I know you like the USA! We haven't even been there... the closest we came was when we were in Canada last year.

I think Thailand may have become a little saturated. Vietnam is a good alternative, Sri Lanka as well, both with an exciting history, both old and new. For us, the USA is no longer an option, more than possibly NY. Have seen most of it and it has been nice, educational and exciting. But we miss the more cultural part .....
We are keen to see more of Europe and we have much to discover here.

Ditte, agree that there are sooo many options in Asia. We liked both Vietnam and Malaysia, and then there are lots of countries we haven't visited. We would also like to explore more of Europe. There is so much to see in Europe!

I understand that! We love Spain and right now it is very cheap for us Swedes to holiday there.
Now we were there even before the economic crisis and we loved the country, the people, the food and the wine just as much then.
What's more, Spain is not only very big but also incredibly beautiful.

BP, we have not been to Spain much, but in February we were in Barcelona - a nice and interesting city! When we go on a long trip with the motorhome, we will certainly see more of Spain!

Can understand that Spain is on top!
We dream of going there in the autumn!
I think we visited Thailand twice, the first and last time. We were there a few years ago.
Were not impressed at all, too hot and too humid!

Hi yes I would almost rather choose Spain over Thailand. Can't really specify why. I just love Spain!

Lennart, hope you get to Spain this autumn! We have been to Thailand once and it was ok, but there are many other countries that we have liked more.
Ninni, I now realise that we must take the opportunity to see more of Spain when we go on a long trip!
