One in four Swedes have backpacked at some point in their lives, according to a survey by Skyscanner. Backpacking is defined here as "visiting one or more countries with only a backpack as a pack". Women have backpacked slightly more than men. And where do we prefer to backpack?
Where Swedes prefer to backpack
- Europe (65 %)
- South-East Asia (26 %)
- North (23 %).
I like the concept of backpacking because you are free to travel as you wish. It's a bit like a budget version of motorhome travel in that way. We have backpacked through countries like Russia, Mongolia, China, Ukraine, Kenya and Tanzania. When I was younger, I also travelled by train through Eastern Europe with a friend. Have you ever backpacked?
Ama de casa says:
Yes, we have backpacked many times. But in the mid-90s, Anders realised that it was easier to pull a suitcase than to carry two backpacks...

Ama de casa, we have probably come to that conclusion several times too... but it depends on where you are travelling. Suitcases are great for paved sidewalks specifically... By the way, the Africans on the boat trip in the picture had another suggestion: a bag or cardboard box worn on the head. It looked impressively easy when they did it, but I have a feeling it will look less graceful if I try it....

No, it is something we have never tried, but have often dreamed of.
It has come too much in between as a child, for example. 🙂
Greece was one of my dream goals, maybe one day it can be with the motorhome....who knows 🙂.

Nice picture of you!
Have never backpacked for the simple reason that I am terribly lazy and comfortable. And so is my husband. I see no pleasure in carrying 15-25kg on my back. Sorry, then I suggest the motorhome!

I have mostly backpacked in the USA; Hawaii, Grand Canyon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Massachusetts with the islands Martha's Winyard and Chappaquidick and Florida. Even on our Round the World trip there was some backpacking. But now I am probably a little too comfortable..... fun it was and incredible memories.

Maggan and Ingemar, it's not too late!

BP, we may well be most comfortable in the motorhome. But sometimes it has been fun to backpack. And you don't go and carry all the time... most of the time the bag is in a hotel room....
😉
Ditte, the best thing about travelling is that you always have the memories. We have forgotten many other things, but we remember the trips!

Absolutely, many times. Love the feeling of freedom! A little more difficult now when you have children though...
