Reporters at Reader's Digest "dropped" 192 wallets in 16 cities around the world to see what happened. The wallets included a name with a mobile phone number, a family photo and $50 worth of cash. The result?
Helsinki residents most honest
Helsinki proved to be the most honest city, according to the Reader's Digest survey. A total of 11 out of 12 wallets were returned here. Other relatively honest cities were Mumbai (9 out of 12), Budapest (8 out of 12) and New York (8 out of 12).
The least honest city was Lisbon, where only one out of 12 wallets was returned. You should also not lose your wallet in Madrid (2 out of 12) or Prague (3 out of 12). What is your experience with honesty/dishonesty in different cities?
Lennart says:
I visited Tokyo in the early 90s!
The Japanese do not tolerate alcohol very well.
There were Japanese sitting on park benches and Japanese lying on lawns, fast asleep.
Our friends then told us that no one was robbed.
You could put your wallet on the hotel stairs and be sure it would be returned.
I don't know how it is today.

It was a surprise again. Fortunately, we have never been robbed. However, the husband has twice been noticed by passers-by when he had dropped his wallet from his trouser pocket. Both times in Benidorm.

Maggan and Ingemar says:
When we were in Lisbon 8 years ago, we were robbed in the early morning at 9.30 while waiting for our flight home. Surely most people there would keep a wallet if they found one. That they are more honest in most other cities is good and I wonder how it is in Sweden?

Lennart, it's nice to feel so safe! I've never been to Tokyo, so I have no experience...
BP, there you go! We haven't been robbed either, but I think we almost were once in Ulan Bataar in Mongolia...
Marina, I would have guessed that too... but I've never been to Singapore.
Maggan and Ingemar, wow, that really confirmed the discoveries from Lisbon... Sweden was unfortunately not involved, but it would have been interesting to know how things went here!

I think Singapore and Beijing should be included. Two very safe cities and in both of them I have forgotten things and had them returned to me by resourceful residents. But good for Helsinki.

It's a bit difficult to judge because I've never been out for anything yet, it's best to add!
It's best to hold on to your stuff as best you can! Pepper, pepper take in wood! 🙂

I have never experienced anything like that. Son and daughter-in-law (Japanese) say that in Japan's big cities it's pretty safe to lose something. The stuff comes back.

Ditte, so nice when it feels so safe in a city!
Veiken, the safest way is to not drop anything at all...
😉
No M, several people have mentioned cities in Asia (Japan, Singapore, Beijing) as being honest in this respect. Sounds positive!

Hmmm now I've never lost any valuables directly, like a wallet or mobile phone or something... just about 1 million dummies that the kid has thrown out of the trolley (and that there is actually always someone friendly who notices and comes running after you) 😛
But overall, I think it feels like people in general around the world are honest. I think people are honest and helpful, you do not want to have on your conscience that you stole someone else's things, but then of course there are some who are exceptions 😉.
However, I am amazed at how careless people actually are! In my life I have found a handful of key rings, 3 mobile phones, 1 laptop, 2 lost dogs and 2 wallets. Which, of course, have been returned to their rightful owner 🙂.

I missed my handbag in a taxi in Rome once and thought I'd never see it again... But the driver came back with it fifteen minutes later.

Interesting! While NY is now named one of the world's most dangerous cities... Dangerous but honest, perhaps!
