It's no surprise that Swedes love travelling, but which destinations are growing in popularity? A new survey by Skyscanner shows that Macedonia's capital Skopje is the destination that has increased the most in 2013 compared to last year. Also high on the list are Dublin, Hamburg and Manila.
New destinations for Swedes
Sometimes you get the feeling that Swedes always want to return to the same familiar destinations: Thailand, the Canary Islands, London ... but we also want to discover new destinations! The survey shows that Swedes were most keen on Skopje in Macedonia. Blue and yellow travellers are also increasingly interested in the European cities of Dublin and Hamburg and sunny Manila in the Philippines.
"It's great to see that Swedes are starting to discover new travel destinations around the world. This is largely due to the fact that we are becoming increasingly wealthy and starting to look for new exciting destinations to visit. Many are also focusing on finding trips that fit their wallet or calendar, rather than letting the destination determine the price and departure time," says Annica Jansson, Head of Nordic at Skyscanner.

Tehran...not so expected perhaps but what you don't know is that Tehran is a relatively open city compared to other places in the country. A colleague was just there and told me about pleasure and that women don't have to wear a scarf.
I don't know if the city is on the list because Sweden has many Iranians? I am keen to go there but have the opportunity to do it over a weekend. It still feels a bit weird to go to Iran for a Swedish, blonde girl. We'll see if I get the courage to go.

Anna in Qatar, I would love to visit Iran, but I am also guessing that immigrant Iranians may be the reason why the country ranks so high. You who live in Qatar are already brave! For myself, it would feel good if someone could guide you a little so you do not make a mistake, haha... otherwise I would love to go there! Have met so many nice Iranians over the years and also read many books from there.

Skopje, that was another surprise! Fun! I also had no idea that Manila would be so big with skyscrapers. Talk about getting rid of all preconceived notions ...

Nice to have some unexpected destinations. Can't really understand Manila though. Have been there, but it felt more like we wanted to move on. Not a beautiful city in my opinion. Brisbane, also unexpected. Must have missed something there. But good starting point if you want to go to Surfer's Paradise. And there we were. Sidney or Melburne I would probably have guessed on a placement. As for Theran, it does not appeal at all now. Feels too much "restrictive". But as someone wrote, it is the first home country of many Swedes - maybe that can influence.
Otherwise, there is a lot to see around the world. Not to mention Europe.

I loved Brisbane, I liked Sydney and Melbourne as well..but thought Brisbane is a pretty big city but still very relaxed atmosphere.
Will be fun to hear what you think about the Philippines! 🙂 Do not think I know anyone who has been there actually

BP, I didn't realise that Manila was so big either...
Ditte, they have looked at the searches, so maybe it's not always the city itself that attracts us. We have also searched for Manila, but what we want is the rest of the Philippines...?
Alexandra, glad you like Brisbane and the other Australian cities! We report from the Philippines
🙂
