We did a lot of reading during our holiday in the Philippines, and one of the books I read was The East End Midwife. Jennifer Worth worked in the 1950s as a midwife and nurse in the poorest parts of London, and this is her memoir.
Feminism and medicine in Europe
It's a fascinating historical document, not least because it tells us about the view of women and medicine in Europe not so long ago. It is sometimes a little dizzying to realise how poor and underdeveloped it could be in our part of the world so late in the day that people can still remember it.

I have seen the TV series and liked it very much and later I read the book which I thought was great. And it was not so long ago that England and we other countries in the West were so miserable.
