Travel blogging for a living - can you do it? The answer is yes, as there are proven to be those who do. But you might have to count both with hard work and with an insecure and uneven income.
Matthew makes a living from travel blogging
Now, if travel blogging provides uncertain or questionable income, what would be the benefit? Well, a free lifestyle on the move of course. One blogger who has made travel blogging his main source of income is Matthew Karsten of the Expert Vagabond blog. I this post you can read his detailed description of how he finances his lifestyle.
Co-operation and sponsorship
In short, Matthew, who has been travelling for a few years, has financed this in different ways. Initially, he had saved money, and also had an online business (selling various how-to guides). Now he uses his blog, which provides income in the form of adverts, links and partnerships with companies. He also sells photos and travel reports, and gets sponsored by different destinations to write about them.
Hard work
Today, Matthew says he earns between $2,000 and $5,000 a month. However, he emphasises that there have been times when he has been completely broke, and that the project has required hard work. Living this way may seem exciting, but it's not for everyone. Is this a lifestyle that would appeal to you?

Interesting question and interesting about people "taking the plunge"... It's a timely issue, I think. More people seem to "downshift" and "live their dream". With less money and more freedom... By the way, downshifting is a strange word in this context, because you "shift" upwards in many respects as well... Free time, quality of life, freedom....
In terms of time, I could imagine being busy with "my interests" full time. But the uneven income ... Is a more difficult question ... A balance how much the free lifestyle "is worth". Especially since my and the family's interests cost a lot... And it's not just me that the uneven income would affect, but also the children.
However, there is a middle ground... Work less, do more other things...
And less of other things, because somewhere along the line you will also save money/reduce expenses...

Definitely not for me. A high security factor is too important to me, but it is certainly an exciting and instructive way to live at the "right" stage of life.

Inspiring 🙂 It's actually possible to make a living from blogging about travelling too, that would be the dream 🙂.

I guess I feel that I am too lazy for that. It is easier to be employed even though my job is stressful with a lot of responsibility - preschool teacher.
I think travelling is more of a hobby than a job.

ActiveDays, I think more people are asking that question today. And of course it doesn't have to be about blogging. But how do you want to live? Both money and time/freedom are valuable, so it's a balance...?
Steve, of course you have to make choices based on your life and what you want and can do. But in any case, it's important to think about it!
Mstraveltipsy, we may feel a little hungry for more freedom... then you have to think about exactly what that should look like.
Britt, the most important thing is to think, so that you make a decision based on what you want and think!

Of course it would be exciting if it was possible, but the financial security outweighs it, at least for me. On the other hand, you can scratch a few lottery tickets and hope for an increase in cash that way. Enough and I would jump into something unknown 🙂 .

Not now, as I'm too comfortable and want some "luxury" in my life. But as a 20-30 year old, life would have suited me perfectly. The requirements were smaller and fewer then, too bad there was no internet at that time;/)

It would definitely suit me! 😀 But now I have small children and you can't just flit around like that. However, I am determined that at some point in my life I will be my own boss and in such a way that I can decide on my time and place myself. I just have to figure out within what haha, luckily I am quite young so I have a while left to think. Sometimes it is almost a little hard to be such a restless soul as I am.... surely many who recognise themselves in it, that you always have to have something new going on.

It would be wonderful if you could make a living that way and why not? How many people do not support themselves by having blogs about fashion, make-up, etc. Imagine if I could support myself by travelling around Greece in the summers. Further away will probably be a little too hard for me because I have a family... The uncertainty of steady income I am so used to so there is no problem... So what should I do now then to make a living from my blog? But from next year then...the season has already started and I'm in the shop...?

Across the board, financial security is also important, more or less depending on the situation and whether you have a family, etc.
BP, yes, the more "requirements" you acquire, the more difficult it probably becomes...
😉
Alexandra, when you have children you have to consider more than just yourself. But you can still find a business where you are your own person. Hope you find something that suits you!
🙂
Anita, of course it is! I guess it's partly about having so many readers that it becomes interesting for advertisers (and the fashion blogs are often ahead there) and partly in some way find opportunities for cooperation with companies that will be win-win ...

Katta's Considerations says:
It is certainly possible to make a living from blogging, which is quite common in the US. I have only made a few thousand dollars myself but have stopped blogging about "commissioned work" because it didn't suit my personality. Fun to read the article. Hugs

Regardless of orientation, it can be worth it if it is something you are passionate about and if you may not have children to be responsible for 🙂 But it's fun that the opportunity exists!

There's no quick cash - it's a lot of work and planning, plus you have to get a lot of people to come in most days!
PS. I forgot to ask if you have checked the IP address blocker LionScripts?

Katta, I can imagine that it is more widespread in the US. But maybe you can get a bit bigger in such a large market too...
Camilla, it is certainly more difficult to make uncertain choices if you have children to take care of. And being passionate about it is probably a prerequisite!
Veiken, oh how nice that you reminded me! I've looked at it now and it seems good! Now I just have to figure out how to do it. Maybe it's not that hard, but right now I have to go. I'll get back to you!
FantasyDining, I also find it a bit tempting.
