Did you know that motorhomes often have the wrong tyres and tyre pressure? A total of 70% of all motorhomes and caravans have the wrong tyre pressure, and one in four campers don't even have the right tyres. This is according to tyre experts Däckteam, who investigated how well we keep track of the tyres on our motorhomes and caravans.
Tyres age quickly
"Caravan owners should use better tyres on it than on their car, but unfortunately many do not. Inspecting a caravan or motorhome can give a false sense of security because the tyres are not always examined", says Thomas Widén, tyre expert at Däckteam, in an article in Expressen.
The reason why many people drive with bad tyres is that vehicles are often stationary and exposed to a lot of sunlight. This causes them to age quickly. "One tip is to cover the wheels when the vehicle is parked", says Thomas Widén.
Have you checked your tyre pressure?
Under-inflation is another summer scourge that affects passenger cars as well as motorhomes and caravans. With the extra load, cars and trailers need more air in their tyres. Under-inflation causes the car to understeer and consumes more fuel - unnecessarily. What about you, do you check the tyres and tyre pressure of your motorhome/caravan?
Some tips for looking after your tyres
Motorhomes have the wrong tyres and tyre pressure, according to experts in the field. Here are some tips for taking care of your tyres. Source: Tyre Team.
- Both caravans and motorhomes require reinforced tyres, rims and valves.
- The right air pressure makes your tyres last longer - measure when the car is loaded!
- Protect your tyres from dry cracking by avoiding sunlight when your car is parked.
- Unpack your motorhome or caravan when you're not using it, so you can remove the tyres and store them in a dark, cool place.
- Pick up the motorhome/caravan and lift it slightly so that you don't strain the tyres when the vehicle is parked.
- Check for punctures and nails every time you drive.
- Clear the tyre tread of stones and other debris.

Yes, I do check sometimes!
5.5kg so it pulls a little less!

Yes, we usually check the air pressure 😉 But I wonder in this hot summer if the air doesn't expand in the tyres for everyone and can't help but check more often in that case :-/.

It's probably not just motorhomes that have incorrect tyre pressures, many cars do too. I actually check the tyres and if they look a bit inflated, I add air.

We now drive 4.8 in front, 4.5 on the first rear axle and 4.3 on the last according to Alko's recommendation, great comfort.

It is important to remember that the expansion is dependent on how warm it is outside and differs slightly depending on the size of your motorhome, measure after about 10 miles of driving in the climate where you are, not just cold tyres as too much air pressure is just as damaging to a tyre as too little air pressure.
