Safety when travelling, do you have to think about it? Summer is here and many people are about to embark on trips, to exotic locations or around our own country. You can, of course, be robbed, have an accident or lose things even at home, but the fact is that the risks are a bit greater when travelling. On the one hand, you are often carrying valuable items, and on the other hand, you are travelling in areas that you may not know very well.
Safety when travelling
You can't protect yourself against all unforeseen events, but it's good if you can eliminate some unnecessary risks! Fortunately, we haven't had any serious incidents, although we have had someone pull the garage door of our motorhome and the engine has started to struggle in the Alps. At home we have had bicycles and other items stolen. Have you experienced anything while travelling, and how do you protect yourself?
Some tips to protect yourself while travelling
- Photographing passports, tickets and other important documents and email the images to an email address that you can access from the web. Then you can access them even if you lose your mobile phone or computer.
- Do not leave valuables in plain sight - Sometimes it is the opportunity that makes the thief. If you are travelling by motorhome, it is unnecessary to leave valuables by the windows or doors. Some items can be locked in a safe that is bolted to the motorhome.
- Get a key fob - If you lose your keys, the consequences are significant and you may have to change the locks, for example. With key fob 9 out of 10 get their lost keys back.
- Bring the blocking number - If you lose a credit card, it is important to have a blocking number so that you can immediately call the bank to block the card.
- Check your insurance - Home insurance is often sufficient for travelling, but not always. The best thing to do is to call the insurance company and check what applies.
- Order roadside assistance if you are travelling by car or camper van. - In the event of an accident, you can get a jump start or be towed to the nearest garage.

When I read your tips, I immediately think of poor Rantamor who lost a newly purchased computer and camera equipment worth 30,000 SEK, not to mention their suitcase with clothes. All this happened in the middle of the day in Malmö while travelling in a camper van.
Personally, we've managed quite well except for a camera theft at JFK in New York.

BP, I also read what happened to her... terrible. You can never protect yourself completely unfortunately...
Henny, thank you for your lovely comment! In fact, we are very busy and very tired, although sometimes I think that blogging and reading blogs can serve as a relaxation for me.

I have been robbed twice. Once when I lived in sharm el sheikh, then we were robbed of the beach bag when we were swimming at the pool, then the thief got the home key and some sun cream. Pretty hard to be robbed of the key abroad when the phone is at home.
. Then one time in Australia we were sleeping in our campervan and the lock on one of the front doors malfunctioned and could not be locked sometimes. Someone had looked in while we were sleeping and taken our cash from our wallets.

Very good tips I must say 🙂 there were several of them I did not even think of before. But I will really take it with me to the next trip. I travel a lot to the USA and Aruba among other things, it is quite zealous over there - with everything. So having a backup on passports etc may be worthwhile if something one day would shit itself!
