Fires are a hot topic right now, unfortunately. The top priority is of course to deal with the terrible forest fire in Västmanland. But it is of course also important to prevent future fires. Unfortunately, campsites are not very good from a fire safety point of view, if we are to believe Sveriges Radio ...
Safety distances are not maintained
The Swedish Rescue Services Agency's general advice on fire protection at campsites states that there should be at least 4 metres between each caravan/camper, and caravans should be positioned facing outwards. But when the local radio stations went to check, there were several campsites where caravans were only one metre apart. Not great from a fire safety point of view ...
Could be prosecuted
According to Swedish Radio security is not at all what it should be. P4 Halland addresses the same news, and Fredrik Borgström, a fire engineer at the civil defence department in Halmstad says "If something were to happen, such as a major fire on a campsite that might even cause death, the operator could actually be prosecuted". What do you think it is like on campsites? And by the way ... what about caravan parks?
Lennart says:
At Sälstensgränd camping in Härnösand there are exemplary large plots!
6-7 metres between vehicles!

Ditte says:
"It's good that the radio and the press are taking up the subject of fire safety, which probably applies in more areas. I think many do not think about the dangers that can easily occur.
Seems good with the campsites that have large plots. Perhaps they earn less, but money should never be a factor when it comes to safety.
This should also ring some bells for boat owners who are often in close proximity to piers in guest harbours. On boats, careless handling of gas or petrol is often a scourge as well.
I hope that the campsite owners will think about this and also the guests, of course.

I didn't know that - the four metres between the teams, that is. But it sounds logical. I have no experience myself.

Ninni, Henrik and the Hjulius motorhome says:
I've been to campsites that are too close together, but also to campsites that have been really good and "the right distance". Pitches as well. Some do not seem to have any rules and some may not "care" or may think "it does not happen to us" when they park close to the neighbour. Other sites have really nice squares and really marked where to stand and a "crossed" area in between that shows that you are not allowed to park there - that's good.
It would be a disaster with a fire on a campsite 🙁 well, or a car park too, of course.

Yes, it is scary when it happens!!!
In Gränna harbour we stood with a motorhome in front of us.
at a distance of only 1 metre, not good!!!
Strange that they are allowed to stand so close to each other!
The squares were way too close together!!!
Take care......

Lennart, of course there are good campsites! That sounds exemplary from a fire safety point of view!
Ditte, it's often the money that counts. If you get more people in, there will be more profit. Interesting comparison with boats, where there are also things that are flammable!
Ninni, that's probably our experience too, that it can be quite different. But a fire would be terribly scary...
Rolle and Carina, yes, sometimes it is very close, especially in car parks, I think ...

Cat's Considerations says:
In Kiruna, this is a certain problem with caravan camps, at least in the beginning when the city got more and more caravans that serve as work housing. Small campsites are formed here and there and around these caravans are many things, barbecues, scooters, cars, rubbish etc. The dwelling also grows outside the caravan, and the caravans have always been very close to each other. I think that the control today is greater precisely because of fire safety reasons.

Across the board says:
This usually works on campsites, but in some cases the neighbours are too close. Pitches are almost invariably closer than 4 m to the neighbour. If you park too far away from your neighbour's motorhome, you could end up with someone squeezing in between!

We've had a couple of fires at campsites, which fortunately had a good outcome. This one, for example:

We were very close to abandoning the tent and going by car that time.
