We've been wanting to visit Berlin for a long time, but for some reason it hasn't happened... yet. Funnily enough, it sometimes feels like we're missing out on some of those relatively nearby destinations, even though it's easy to travel there!
Table of contents
Classic sights
So what is the appeal of this German city? First and foremost, you want to see the classic sights such as Brandenburg Gate, the cathedral Berlin Cathedral and the 365 metre high TV tower.
Berlin does have a dark history that can also be interesting to learn about, for example by visiting the mighty Holocaust temple or the museum at the Checkpoint Charlie. Vid East Side Gallery in the south-eastern part of the city, you can also see a section of the Berlin Wall, which artists have covered with colourful paintings.
City life and shopping
Then there's the culture, the people and the atmosphere. Berlin seems to be the city that has something for everyone! In terms of shopping, you'll find exclusive malls, youthful fashion, vintage, markets and flea markets. Apparently, if you want to experience the bohemian side of things, you should head to the neighbourhood of Prenzlauer Berg, where you will find shopping and outdoor cafes, or to the neighbourhood of Kreuzberg, which offers kebab stands and alternative shops.
For exclusive shopping, it is instead Charlottenburg and West Berlin's main street Kürfurstendamm that applies. If you go to Berlin, you have to try the infamous nightlife too! There's everything from cosy little bars to hard industrial techno nightclubs... And if you get tired of the city centre pulse, you can visit Berlin Zoo and aquarium!
Interesting hotels
There also seems to be a lot of different exciting hotels to take in, such as the high-tech music hotel. nhow Berlin or the design hotel Lux 11, a former military hospital and KGB monitoring centre.
Or how about taking in the Chalet palace - hotel where you stay (indoors) in small charming old caravans? If you only want to make a short trip to this cool German city, you can easily take the flight Stockholm-Berlin.

For us it will be Berlin in the autumn. I was there in the early 1960s and now I have a good friend from the Beijing era who lives and works there, so it will be perfect with a personal guide.
There are many things that appeal to me... I'll take anything that's offered. I can probably give up shopping in favour of other things. If I don't come across something I really want....

Birgitta and I have long talked about taking the motorhome to Berlin. We have been there twice on a bus trip but not in the motorhome. I believe in the low season and the site in the middle of the city. It is so nice and so much history take several days. We were in the TV tower when my colleague who was from Poland said, "I will never set foot there. Birgitta put the hand vest in the window then when we looked it was gone the tower rotated. But we could calmly retrieve it again.

Yes, go there! I lived there for a year and loved it. There are lots of great places, but I always recommend going outside of Berlin if you have time. Potsdam is beautiful, especially the Sansouice area. Blogged about it a while ago: resfredag.se/2014/06/sanssouci-potsdam-berlin.html
Hugs!

Exactly! I've been to Berlin once before the wall fell, and even then I loved the city. Since then, we have also thought about visiting Berlin. The pictures I've seen on Kiki Freese's website are really tempting!

Nils-Åke, good that there is a central parking spot! A little drama with the handbag, but nice when it goes well!

BP, interesting to have visited the city at that time too! And now I had to google Kiki Freese. Thanks for the tip!

I was in Berlin at Easter and it was the second time. There is so much to see and if you have time, Potsdam is worth a visit. Berlin is a city full of culture, art, history and exciting restaurants! It is a city that has everything! You can move around easily with the S- and U-bahn and it is advisable to buy a Tageskart. This time we stayed in the old eastern part near Mauerpark which has a well-known flea market on Sundays.

I have actually been to Berlin even though it was a few years ago. The cultural offerings are superb; it may be wise to book a concert in advance if you are interested in music. The music selection is huge. I like the National Gallery of course, there were two editions at that time, nowadays one collected from the old East and West. There is also a collection of Picasso's art in a special museum, but I can't remember what it's called. A lot of what Hitler condemned as "entartete Kunst" is also collected in Berlin! Roland looked at war memorabilia in something called something similar to the Wiedestandgestätte. It was an experience that he still talks about, about Stauffenberg's assassination.

Of course you should visit Berlin. It's an interesting city with lots to see.
We were there last year and stood in the car park in the middle of the city and cycled around, absolutely perfect. Easy cycling when the city is flat hihihi.
Made three posts about Berlin on my blog joytillsammans.blogspot.se/2013/08/till-berlin.htmlm.

Glad you used our picture:-)) Have a good time and good luck with the houseboat. It will be great:)

I recommend the Parliament building simply because so much has happened there. Out on the roof terrace there are still bullet holes in the facade. It's also touching that a British architect was commissioned to create the new glass dome - a typical Berlin feel. It is cool in itself with optical illusions where you go up and down in circles among mirrors.
The Pergamon Museum with ancient treasures from Babylon and more is recommended if you like history. The entire museum island is a World Heritage Site.
I was fascinated by the Olympic Stadium as well, with its horse statues and other national architecture that gave me chills.
Boat trips are fun and so is a trip to the little wall that remains and has a lot of paintings - the East Side Gallery.
