It is mainly the hotels that are cheap, but the low prices often also apply to food, drink and attractions. In Bulgaria's capital Sofia, for example, a double room costs just over 500 kroner, according to the article.

Not surprisingly, it is cities in the eastern states that are cheap.
I have visited Riga, Gdansk and Sarajevo. I probably like Riga best.

BP, Sarajevo sounds exciting! We like Gdansk better than Riga... but on the other hand we have been unlucky with the weather in Riga...

Renate's travels says:
I can highly recommend Riga, Vilnius and Krakow. Skopje is probably also a nice city, very cheap anyway! I was most shocked by the number of statues and architecture when I was there recently - this is a city that has spent a LOT of money to make itself attractive to tourists. I barely visited Bucharest, but can highly recommend other places in Romania like Sighisoara and Brasov. I want to go to Sarajevo!
