We are planning to embark on a year-long trip in Europe with our motorhome. So what do you do during such a long journey? Well, we don't know exactly yet, but we'll share some of our thoughts.
Table of contents
Experience and tourism
First of all, we want to experience - we want to see new places and sights, meet people, taste food, hear music, smell smells... We want to visit restaurants and cafes, go out dancing, look at castles and churches, stroll in shops, hike in nature, sunbathe and swim, go on boat trips to small islands and buy local food that we cook in the campervan. Yes, you know, things you do when you are a tourist!
Meeting friends, bloggers and blog readers
We would also very much like to meet friends, bloggers and blog readers. We hope that many different friends will come and visit, and we also hope to meet you bloggers and blog readers who are travelling or living around Europe. We hope to have many nice meetings and exchange experiences and tips about blogging, travelling and different places in Europe!
Writing and photography
We are planning to spend a lot of time on write and photography. Writing is my (Helena's) main interest, while Peter wants to do photography. I want to blog and write reports - but preferably also write a book (yes, it's a dream)! Peter has bought lenses for both distance and very close photography, as well as a tripod, and wants to develop his photography in different ways.
... and a lot more
Other things we plan to do include train, read books, watch films and TV series, playing video games, learning to kite surf (Peter) and see how we can use the blog as a source of income. We also want to slow down and plan for the future.
When life gets busy, it's hard to think about what you really want. We believe you change during this journey, and we're curious to see how. Perhaps that journey (the inner one) feels even more interesting and challenging than the outer one!
This is how we see the trip right now, but as I said, it is possible that we will change our views during the trip... What do you think? Could you imagine going on a long journey, and what would you want to do then? Or maybe you have experience of a long journey?
Ditte says:
It sounds like a perfect arrangement! And nice to not have too much planned and booked and stay where you want and then see what happens.
We lived for almost four years in Beijing and I worked a lot, but it was still very different in every way from living and working at home where most things are so scheduled and planned. (Yes, my job was both planned and structured of course).
We did a round-the-world trip in 2005 and were away for over two months, but we had time to think and reflect on life during that time. But then you make new choices all the time and you change during the journey.
I am really looking forward to following your journey both in text and pictures.

It is so cool that you are doing this! Can I ask how it is financed? So have you saved money and calculated how much will be needed for a year? Or how it works? 🙂

We almost dare to promise you that the desire to make another long trip with a motorhome, after you have returned home, will overshadow everything else - that was the case for us after last winter's winter trip, so we are now on a new 8-month long trip with the motorhome.
Warm greetings from a 28 degrees hot Benidorm !
PS. If you pass Benidorm, you are welcome to see how we live - we live at El Raco Camping and on plot 611.
If so, please let us know on our blog with a comment beforehand so that we are home when you arrive!

Ditte, yes of course living abroad is a very different and special experience, even if you work there!
Jennifer, so yes, the basis of funding is actually about low spending rather than high income. For many years we've been working on eliminating expenses. Instead of moving to a larger and more expensive apartment, we chose to move to a smaller, cheaper one and thus get rid of loans, for example. So the basis is that we have low expenses. Now we also remove all fixed expenses, such as phones, internet, etc. Then there is the fact that we own our motorhome. Finally, it is a combination of renting out our accommodation, earning some money from the blog and saving some.
Bosse and Gerd, how wonderful to hear, now we are even more eager to get away!!! And 28 degrees sounds great! It would be great fun to see you - we hear from us if we have the roads past!!!!
🙂

I'm really jealous of the length of your trip! I was aiming for 4 months for us, but we got 2.5 months and the benefit of keeping our jobs too. I am still a new employee from 1 September. It will be fun to follow you!

I love the word U-p-p-l-e-v-e-l-s-e. Try it! It can be in big and small! Open my mind to anything that might come my way!
Long journey, yes! No problem with that. Quite the opposite! When are you leaving?

Hmpf! I saw the calculator! 😉

Sounds like a dream! Oh you have just the right attitude when it comes to experiences and surprises!
A blog as a source of income... as long as you don't become a Blondinbella;-)
Yes, I could definitely imagine a long trip in a motorhome:-)

Wow, that sounds exciting. Writing, telling stories and taking photos is almost the greatest pleasure for me and I think it is for you too. Good luck and it will be exciting to see where you stop, or just roll by.

Veiken, isn't it great to have experiences? And I don't need an answer to that question now...
😉
Rolle and Carina, glad you want to follow us! We dare not wait until retirement. When I retire, Peter will be... 80! And right now it suits both of us well with work and children.
BP, this is our dream! So source of income and source of income ... we pull in about a 1000 a month, and it contributes a little to the travel budget. We will probably not be a Blondinbella... haha
😉
Matts, thank you! It will be very exciting and we will take the opportunity to learn more about writing and photography!
🙂

Hm, yes your first post was spam-marked for some strange reason :/ But have published it now, so now it is there 😀 I think I have been on the same page, recognise the picture with the puzzle you see from above! It's great fun to play like that with pictures 🙂.
Sounds fantastic with a long trip! Should the economy allow when the children get bigger, we would love to do one! Or when we are retired, but preferably before 😛

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR LOAN JOURNEY we are sure you will experience a lot 🙂 Like your concept of low expenses, then there will be no payment paths. Wishing you a pleasant exciting journey!

Yep, if my partner and I are travelling, we might plan a visit if we cross your path. Then there will be coffee!

Mr Lars Permelin says:
I think most of the things listed, apart from writing a book and having the blog as a source of income, are pretty much in line with how we think and want motorhome life to generate.
However, we don't plan to be travelling for that long.
I think you have a very good focus and idea of what your trip should/is expected to provide and bring.

Camilla, when I enter my blog address, many blogs want to mark it as spam. It usually works again if approved once, so thank you! Many people travel at retirement. I don't know if I dare to wait... when I retire, Peter will be 80...
Lena & Jan, thank you so much!!! No certainly, when we are not in a hurry, it really feels unnecessary with toll roads, so we can probably try to avoid it. Hope to see you! I'll try to remember (or write down maybe!) Where everyone is... but feel free to also shout if we are approaching!
🙂
Katarina Wohlfart, where are you travelling and when? Would be great if we could meet!
🙂
Lars, that sounds great! Nice to hear from others who have more experience of travelling in Europe with a motorhome!

How cool that you are going on such a long trip with your motorhome. Really cool and different. AND you're renting out the houseboat for a year? GOOD!
When do you leave?
It will be a memory for life!

Annika, we leave at the end of November. You can find a countdown in the right-hand column of the blog!
