Yesterday we were invited to a fantastic wine tasting and Halloween dinner at the home of Peter's son and his wife: Robin and Alexandra, together with youngest son Billie. We think wine tasting is a fun way to socialise while learning about wine and trying new dishes.
Halloween-themed dinner
We were treated to a really good and different dinner with a Halloween theme. Thank you so much Robin and Alexandra for a great evening! The very nice 5-course dinner went in Halloween theme, with pumpkin in several of the dishes and lots of orange and black colours.
- Starter 1Orange lobster soup with buttered bread slices with chèvre cheese
- Starter 2Black pasta with pumpkin, orange pepper and physalis
- Main courseBeef fillet with cheese gratinated pumpkin
- Dessert 1: Homemade ice cream with coffee and chocolate
- Dessert 2Chocolate muffins and raspberries dipped in white chocolate
Wines
Many times when we have had a wine tasting, we have had a country as a theme, but yesterday the host couple had instead chosen wines that would represent different clearly characteristic flavours.
The six wines we tried: Aurora (Brazil), Gardo & Morris (New Zealand), Chateau L'Ermitage (France), Fetzer (USA), Marquez de Arienzo (Spain) and Quara (Argentina). We also got to try Polish Goldwasser, that is, Polish liqueur with real gold floating around ...
Previous themes
Do you enjoy organising themed dinners or wine tastings, and what themes have you had? Here you can find dinners we have organised with other themes:
- Lebanon: Lebanese wines and Lebanese meze, which we picked up from the restaurant.
- South America: Wines from Chile, Argentina and Uruguay and 5-course dinner including shrimp ceviche and meat stew with chilli and dark chocolate.
- Spain: Spanish wines and lots of different tapas, cold and hot.
- France: French wines and 3-course dinner with snails, beef fillet and chocolate mousse.
- Champagne: Champagne tasting and a seafood-flavoured dinner.
Mr Steve says:
What a fantastic evening of celebration. Wine tasting is not so often for us, but cheese tasting from time to time. Wine and cheese tasting can also be combined.
Goldwasser, that was a first for me.

What a festive dinner! And very well thought out with everything. What a job the host couple has done! Nice for us readers to get tips on both food and drink.
It's good to repeat your other themed dinners because sometimes I find it hard to vary.
Our theme has been seafood, Thai, Spain and China. But there are so many...

Steve, cheese tasting sounds nice! We have never organised it ourselves, but I have been to it. Cheese and wine tasting is perfect, but I've actually been to cheese and tea tasting as well (with work, maybe because the county council doesn't pay for alcohol, perfectly ok policy).
🙂
BP, that was a fantastic dinner!
Ditte, always fun to be invited to dinner when they are well thought out! Thai and China are fun themes if you focus on the food!
Marina, you get a bit more creative too when you "have" to stick to a theme!
😉

Never been to a private wine tasting, but it sounds really nice. Maybe something to take after sometime next summer. Clearly festive worse and then it is also important to be able to cook for the food.
Soon you'll be travelling and it's exciting to follow you and see which countries you choose.
Take care (we do)

Guess there is a lot of work and preparation before a wine tasting and dinner with that menu. Fun idea.
Probably requires a lot of knowledge as well.

Maggan and Ingemar, it is nice and fun with wine tasting... we really recommend! And it's great that you want to "come along" on our trip!
🙂
Lars Permeln, yes, there is a lot of preparation! We are not particularly knowledgeable about wine, but you can get a lot of information about the wines from Systembolaget and then just try it and see what flavours you experience...
😉

Sounds absolutely fantastic :) Why am I never invited to such fun dinners. I love theme dinners, preferably of the unusual kind but also ordinary ones. This week we will have a Queen of Hearts theme dinner;)

Sounds like a very nice evening! I had probably never managed to get a 4 course in a good way haha. Theme dinner is fun! But inviting me to a wine tasting would have been a waste of money. I do not like the taste of alcohol and only drink it sometimes because it is fun to get a little round about the feet once in a while. (I thought I was supposed to grow out of the drinking to get drunk thing, but apparently not haha. Luckily it only happens once a year nowadays).

FantasyDining, you are super good at organising such things! But it is fun to be invited when someone has thought a little extra.
Alexandra, it's important to make dishes that can be partially prepared - and not make things too complicated for yourself... It's interesting that you don't like the taste of alcohol. I've heard other people say that, but not so many. I'm a bit the opposite - I like the taste of many alcoholic products, but I don't want to be too affected... (But of course, a little relaxed feeling in the body is not bad!)
Pia, yes they definitely managed to impress us with the menu!
