Doctors and medical care are of course also available abroad, but it is still a good idea to visit a doctor before travelling long distances. When travelling in Europe, the European Health Insurance Card entitles you to emergency medical care, but there are still some things to consider in advance, such as dental care and medication.
European Health Insurance Card
When travelling within the EU, it provides European Health Insurance Card the right to emergency medical care, under the same conditions as for nationals of the country concerned. However, the card does not give the right to preventive dental care. It therefore becomes a visits to the dentist for me today!
Prescription medicines
It can also be convenient to buy prescription medicines that you know you will need. For me, it's about migraine medicines for my migraine. I have now received a prescription from my neurologist and ordered the drugs from the pharmacy. At the same time I received a form for authorisation to take some of these medicines to other countries within Schengen... Not that anyone will check, but ok then!

You might as well organise your medication at home. Many are available, but it's good to be on the safe side.
I have had some experience of using the European Health Insurance Card and it has been very useful. It entitles you to essential care and that is usually enough. In addition, it is good to have accident and health insurance, even if it is expensive. But it can be much more expensive if you don't have it.

Yes, health is probably the most important thing to take with you on such a trip. As with all other "journeys"

Ditte, it's good to have insurance, but it's a jungle to find out what it covers and what it doesn't... and you don't want to pay too much unnecessarily either....
Steve, that's right!

You don't want to exchange migraine tablets for something else that is unknown abroad.

It is true that the 2015 ACSI does not come until December. Via the link on my page, you can order it either as a single copy or as a subscription as it comes every year. This summer I actually saw that a campsite we visited had the book for sale. I would call: +31 (0)488-452055. Monday to Friday between 08.30 and 17.00 and ask if they know which campsites might be selling it. What I know is that it is possible to get it to another address in Europe, but then you have to know where you are, and that may not be easy. Maybe someone at home can buy it and when it arrives, send it to where you are. Regardless, it's money well invested 🙂 (Note that it is CampingCard ACSI you should have and not just ACSI because there are lots of other campsites that do not have discounted prices, ie 12, 14, 16 or 18 €).
